Filed under: UFCLAS VEGAS -- This is the UFC 141 live blog for Donald Cerrone vs. Nate Diaz, a lightweight bout on tonight's UFC pay-per-view from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Cerrone (17-3), who is fighting for the fifth time this year, won in UFC fights against Paul Kelly, Vagner Rocha, Charles Oliveira and Dennis Siver. Diaz (14-7) lost to Dong Hyun Kim and Rory MacDonald earlier this year before getting back on track with a submission win over Takanori Gomi in September.
The live blog is below.
Round 1: After the customary display of middle fingers in lieu of the glove touch, referee Herb Dean gives the signal and Cerrone comes charging out with a right hand that Diaz ducks under. After extricating himself from Diaz's grasp, Cerrone lands a nice right, but Diaz keeps the pressure on. Cerrone's looking flat-footed and making for an easy target for Diaz so far. Diaz pops his head back with consecutive punch combos, and Cerrone looks lost. He's got no head movement at all, and Diaz is hitting him at will. Cerrone's taking it, for now at least. He fires back with a head kick and then one to the thigh, but Diaz keeps coming forward. Cerrone slips off a head kick attempt but it back up quickly. Diaz is all forward movement, and he has no trouble finding Cerrone's face. Cerrone is bloodied up and sucking air with his mouth open. Ten seconds left. Diaz clinches and Cerrone adds a knee before the horn. So far it's everything we expected. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Diaz.
Round 2: Diaz marches straight ahead to resume his attack, and Cerrone still seems out of sorts. Cerrone lands a nice left hand counter, then pushes/trips Diaz down but declines to follow him. Jumping knee by Cerrone, then another trip. Diaz keeps coming and lands a couple stinging lefts. Now Cerrone is firing back, but it only makes Diaz up his pace. As an aside, all three ring girls are freaking out over this fight. It's easily the fight of the night so far. Cerrone puts Diaz down again with a kick to his leg, but Diaz is back up quickly. Another leg trip by Cerrone, and Diaz rises just a little bit slower. Diaz stings Cerrone and sends him reeling back, but Cerrone recovers. A chant of 'Diaz!' starts up just before the horn. Cerrone is looking bloody and exhausted. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Cerrone.
Round 3: Diaz flashes the double-bird from across the cage before the round begins. At least they speak a common language. Diaz gets his punch combos working right away, and he's talking to Cerrone in there after nearly every punch now. Cerrone can't do much but bleed at the moment, and Diaz's confidence is growing with every punch he lands. Cerrone trips him down again, but he doesn't seem to have the energy to follow with anything. Good knee by Cerrone, but Diaz responds with a flurry of punches. Diaz kicks and Cerrone again kicks his leg out from under him. He's going down hard on those, and the noise is impressive, but they don't seem to bother Diaz much. Diaz comes forward behind a hook and Cerrone nails him with a nice jumping knee. Diaz batters Cerrone with more brutal hooks and Cerrone comes back with a head kick. What a fight. They finish as they started: hammering away with wild abandon. Cerrone extends his hand at the horn and Diaz takes it, nodding in begrudging appreciation. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Diaz.

"My dad just threatened...
The preview shows have often been used to gauge the potential success of a pay-per-view event, and with the latest episode attracting just 15,000 eyeballs, it suggests a beating at the till despite the presence of blockbuster draw Brock Lesnar.
"It wasn't alarming at all," White told MMAjunkie.com. "Those are the type of ratings that network pulls."
Retirement is inevitable for every athlete. Whether it's voluntary or forced is up to the athlete. In fighting, it's too often forced. There's no exact age or time. Some guys have to walk away in their early 30's, others like the incredible Randy Couture, make it into their late 40's.
The end of the 2011 was unkind to several legends of MMA who are past their 34th birthdays. As a result, their careers are gasping for their last breath of air.
In 2012, we could see the end of the road for Tito Ortiz, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Matt Hughes. Then there's Brock Lesnar.
He's not a legend, but he is the pay-per-view king of the sport and yet his future could be in question following UFC 141. Lesnar has battled serious health issues and after his loss to Cain Velasquez 15 months ago, many question his passion for the sport.

UFC 141: Alistair Overeem's former trainer thinks distractions in camp may affect his chances against Brock Lesnar
"If Alistair had his old team surrounding him, he would have definitely won this fight, I would have predicted a second-round TKO," De Jong wrote in a post for Fighter's Only. "Now, it's a different story. I am not involved in his camp anymore. Me knowing him well, and with all the recent events happening, it is hard to predict."
Between the split from Golden Glory, uprooting his life to Las Vegas, returning to Holland to care for his ailing mother, and the issues with the Nevada State Athletic Commission in getting licensed, there's been a lot of distractions for Overeem. But De Jong says that's not all that's playing into it, either.
"Besides all that, Brock will be the crowds [favorite]," De Jong said. "All this mentioned above would be very hard for any fighter to prepare fully for a big fight like this, and Brock is a strong, huge and amazing wrestler who can take a punch. Of course Alistair has the edge striking standing up and Brock has the edge wrestling and on the ground.
"With all of Alistair's skills and experience - he was with Golden Glory for 12 years, after all - he still might be able to pull off the W but it's not gonna be easy. Fighting is mostly a mental game. The one who will have that in place will be the victor on December 30."
Penick's Analysis: Would it surprise anyone if a number of individuals at Golden Glory were pulling for Lesnar in this fight on Friday night? That would be their vindication that Overeem made a mistake in breaking away from them. There are a lot of things that could negatively impact how Overeem has prepared for this fight, and if he's not ready to deal with Lesnar's size, strength, and ground technique because of them, it's going to be on him. Still, it's interesting to see this type of take from someone that has been very close to Overeem in the past. Overeem absolutely can win this fight, but De Jong's not wrong about the many distractions he's had making it murkier to see him picking up the win.

It's been a lousy year for Georges St-Pierre and he can't even turn to his boys in Canada for a little moral support. Well, it's only one writer's opinion, but Aaron Lefko of Sportsnet.ca included GSP on his "Most Overhyped Athletes of 2011" list.
And even before his injury, St-Pierre was taking verbal shots from the public, the media and fighters for his inability to put away opponents.
He grabbed the international spotlight in April for headlining the first UFC card in Toronto, producing GSP mania. A record UFC crowd of more than 55,000 packed the Rogers Centre to finally see the conquering Canadian hero and he went the full five rounds with Jake Shields in what was more of a clinic on how not to lose a fight than actually win it.
Keep in mind, St-Pierre won the fight against Jake Shields back in April. Since then he's battled injuries all year with the worst coming a few weeks back when he suffered a torn ACL. The fight at UFC 129 is really stuck in the writer's craw.
It was boring at best and continued a pattern of St-Pierre going the full distance without delivering the knockout blow or submission. Heck, the fight before it on the card was way more entertaining than the main event.
We're not exactly sure why it's a bad thing for the undercard to outperform the main event. Plus it seems tough to overhype a guy who's been inactive for eight months.
Check out the rest of the list. Is there anyone on there who's been a champion? Seems a little harsh to put GSP, a legitimate champion, on the list just because he doesn't win the right way.
Is GSP overhyped? Maybe this guy and Nick Diaz are onto something.

The last thing Alistair Overeem needed was any sort of performance enhancing drug testing snafu heading into the biggest fight of his career in the U.S. But that's exactly what happened to the behemoth from Holland.
Overeem, his camp and the Nevada State Athletic Commission had some communications issues. When the NSAC asked for a random drug test sample in mid-November, there was a five-day lapse, the incorrect sample was sent in and it was done by Overeem's personal physician administered the original test. It's all been worked out, Overeem satisfied the state's requirement and his fight against Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 is on, but it just adds another odd chapter for folks who are suspicious over the fighter's enormous growth since 2007.
"You can't get bothered too much by all the stuff that's written," Overeem told the Boston Herald. "To be honest, I don't really have time to read it all because training takes a lot of energy. All the activities that come with being a fighter and fighting at this level take a lot of my energy, so I don't have enough time to read it all."
"Some of it's not nice and people accuse you of stuff and hate a little bit. But if you're going to be in this position, there will always be people who love you and there will always be people who hate you," Overeem said.
"The Reem" is 10-1 since his move to heavyweight. There's a case to be made that he's become a better fighter now that he's not stripping himself down to make 205. In any case, the extra weight allows him to square off against those perceived by casual fans as the biggest and baddest in the sport.
"I think the fight between Brock and me is a dream fight," Overeem said. "I never thought about the possibility of me fighting him in the UFC. I was fighting outside of the UFC and I didn't see the fight coming, maybe ever. The way things went, I'm very happy I got the opportunity."
Of course, the argument could also be made that a 225-pound Overeem might stand a better shot against the gargantuan Lesnar. Speed, movement and technique, not pure power has been the path to beating the former WWE star during his short MMA career.

UFC officials today announced that verbal agreements are in place for the fight.
UFC 143 takes place on the eve of the NFL's Super Bowl, Feb. 4, at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The night's main card airs on pay-per-view, though Brown vs. Cope is expected to be part of the prelims.
Ahead of next weekend's UFC 140 event, THQ has run the main event between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem through simulations in the new UFC Undisputed 3 video game, set for release early next year. Through 25 matches, the game gives Overeem a bit of an edge, and predicts him to win by knockout in the first round next week. In the simulation of the game, Lesnar attempted a total of 287 takedowns, with two of his wins coming by submission via arm triangle. In 92% of the matches Overeem won in the simulation, the finish came by KO. Check out the video below:

Brock Lesnar knows what he's up against in Alistair Overeem next week at UFC 141. He understands the striking skills his opponent brings to the table, and knows how important it is that he take control of the fight. In an interview with AskMen.com, he articulated as much:
"I'm really excited. It's been a long time coming here, and, you know, after all the bullsh** I've been through, it feels good to just do what I want to do with my life -- and that's fight... he's definitely a huge threat on his feet. We've done a lot of different things so that we can try and prevent [him controlling the fight]. I'm not going to give away any ancient Chinese secrets, but we've got to avoid those things. We've got to push this fight, control it and, at the end of the day, I've got to take this fight and make it my own fight. But as soon as I let him dictate, well, that's bad for Brock Lesnar."

No one does it better than Camp Overeem when it comes to video blogs. The latest "The Reem" takes us all over the world as Alistair Overeem fulfills his press duties, meets American fans, goes face-to-face with Brock Lesnar and returns to Holland to take care of his mother, who is dealing with another cancer scare.
Overeem meets Lesnar this Friday at UFC 141 in Las Vegas. The sheer enormity of the fighters is a ridiculous site. It's the first time ever Lesnar appears a little bit smaller than his opponent. If this video doesn't get you fired up for the heavyweight clash, nothing will.
The end of the video is must watch material as Overeem deals with the emotional situation his mother is experiencing. You also get to meet his father, who's been living in England and recently relocated to Holland.

ROUNDTABLE: Will Gegard Mousasi regain the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title in 2012? Why or why not?
RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST?
Mousasi will chew up Lorenz Larkin, but he'd be looking at a rinse and repeat versus Mo Lawal. As we all knew going into his fight with Ovince St-Preux, Mousasi is very capable of dominating overmatched inexperienced fighters who can't get him to the ground. But I didn't see anything on Saturday night, or since Mousasi lost to Lawal in 2010 to indicate that Mousasi's takedown defense has improved by leaps and bounds. Lorenz Larkin, like OSP, is a tantalizing prospect. But since he made the mistake of signing with Strikeforce, he's either going to dominate overwhelmed opponents that can't hang with him, or he's going to be pushed into the spotlight against an opponent he has no chance against. In a just world, Larkin (and OSP for that matter) would be fighting on undercards of UFC shows against similarly talented fighters. Instead Larkin and OSP are stuck dominating guys who have no business in the cage with them (Gian Villante, Joe Cason, etc) and as a result they get nothing more than a paycheck and a 'W', or they get overwhelmed by a Gegard Mousasi or a Mo Lawal, and they get nothing but a paycheck, a 'L', and a beating.
And here I thought I wouldn't be able to continually rip on Strikeforce in 2012 and beyond.
FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR??
I think Mousasi gets the belt back, but only if he implements his gameplan and fights to his potential. The last time he fought King Mo he laid on his back for the whole fight. I know King Mo had something to do with that, but Mousasi looked listless and disinterested in the last fight. If he comes to win, I think he can beat either guy.
ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR
Gegard Mousasi should win against either King Mo vs. Lorenz Larkin. He is one of the most well rounded fighters in the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight division. He matches up well against either fighter, and if he utilizes the strength of his striking game, he should definitely win.
?ALEX WILLIAMS, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR?
No. I see King Mo winning the rematch with his wrestling abilities, the same skills that gave him the edge in his first bout with Mousasi.
ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST
Assuming "King Mo" gets past Larkin, I don't see Mousasi getting the belt anytime soon. "King Mo" has already defeated Mousasi and while it looks as if Mousasi has sort of peaked, "King Mo" continues to get better and better with each fight. Expect Mousasi to be highly disappointed in a supposed rematch against "King Mo."
