Mirko Cro Cop will get another fight in the UFC, according to Dana White

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Mirko Cro Cop isn't retired just yet.

Despite Dana White stating that he didn't think he'd get much opposition from the Croatian in ending his career following a second straight knockout loss to Brendan Schaub in March, the UFC President now says that Cro Cop will get another fight in the UFC.

Speaking with ESPN.com, White revealed that Cro Cop still wants to fight, he has another fight under contract with the UFC and they will honor it.

"This guy wants to fight again and I owe him another fight," White said. "He's a grown man. If he wants to continue to fight, that's his right and he still has a fight with me."

That doesn't mean White's necessarily thrilled with putting Cro Cop back into the cage after the back to back knockout losses to Frank Mir and Schaub, and White said if he was making the call Cro Cop would hang them up. Nevertheless, White doesn't think Cro Cop is too the point he felt Chuck Liddell was at the end, and will allow him the final fight on their agreement.

"Do I think he should've retired? Yeah," White said. "I don't think he's in one of these situations like a Chuck Liddell though, where I thought he needed to retire right then.

"'Cro Cop' and I made a deal and he wants to fight again. I'm going to honor that deal."

There's no word on when he'll return to the cage or who he'll face off against, but fans will see Cro Cop back in the cage again.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: I can't say I'm entirely surprised, but I don't think anyone's going to be clamoring to see Cro Cop take another fight in the UFC anytime soon. After a terrible fight with Frank Mir, he looked decent against Schaub for a bit in their fight, but he was knocked out cold for the second straight fight. With each successive fight that he takes, the legend of his days in Pride continues to be more and more of a distant memory, and if he goes out and gets knocked out again it will be a more unfortunate ending to his career than he was already at with these most recent knockout losses. If he can win the fight, maybe he can go out on a high note, but that will likely lead to him wanting to keep fighting after that.

The two biggest names at Friday's Titan Fighting Championships 18 event faltered with co-headliners Jens Pulver and Jake Rosholt both suffering losses.

Pulver simply was outworked. Rosholt, though, simply made a mistake after dominating his bout.

The fights were part of HDNet's live broadcast from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan.

BELLATOR 45 RESULTS: Christian M'Pumbu captures first Bellator Light Heavyweight Championship, Patricio "Pitbull" Freire earns rematch with Joe Warren

The first Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion was crowned on Saturday night at Bellator 45 in Lake Charles, La., as Christian M'Pumbu defeated fellow finalist Richard Hale. In addition to his title win, Patricio "Pitbull" Freire earned another shot at Bellator Featherweight Champion Joe Warren with a decision win over Daniel Strauss in the season four featherweight tournament.

M'Pumbu's win came in the third round of their bout on MTV2, where he finished Hale with a barrage of strikes after likely splitting the first two rounds. The TKO finish was M'Pumbu's third stoppage win in as many fights in the Bellator season four light heavyweight tournament, the inaugural tournament in the division.

Freire picked up a unanimous decision win over Strauss to take the season four featherweight tournament and the title shot that went along with it. He'll now get a chance to avenge his only career loss, suffered by split decision in the season two featherweight tournament final in a fight that he nearly finished in the first round.

In other action on the night's card, one-time Strikeforce competitor and M-1 prospect Karl Amoussou suffered a split decision loss to Sam Alvey.

Eating baby food, abstinence and kicking butt, all part of what makes up phenom Michael McDonald

A 20-year-old shouldn't be able to walk into the UFC and compete, but that's exactly what Michael McDonald is doing. A few seconds of watching him fight and you understand why he's so advanced for his age. Speaking to him gives you an even better indicator.

With the help of RawVegas.tv, we hunted down McDonald in Las Vegas. He's a very poised, grounded kid. McDonald is spiritual and admitted that he doesn't drink or party, and he's abstinent.

McDonald faces UFC newcomer Chris Cariaso on the undercard of UFC 130. The fighters have a history with Cariaso taking out a McDonald teammate in a past fight. It was a frustrating night for McDonald who worked the corner. He wants to exact a bit of revenge for his buddy. McDonald is a huge minus-300 favorite over Cariaso.

This ‘Pitbull’ has some bite: Patricio Freire gets the job done at Bellator 145-pound final

"Big, strong wrestler grinds out a victory over dynamic striker."

Patricio "Pitbull: Freire couldn't have enjoyed that storyline playing out last weekend when his brother Patricky was grounded often and lost to Michael Chandler at Bellator 44.

At Bellator 45, Freire penned a different story. From the start of his fight against Daniel Straus, the younger of the Pitbull brothers was wary of the former college wrestler's takedowns and avoided the mat for all but a few seconds on his way to winning the Bellator Season 4 Featherweight tourney title in unanimous fashion, 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27, last night in Lake Charles, La.

The win gets Pitbull (17-1) a $100,000 payday and chance to rematch against Bellator 145-pound champ Joe Warren.

"There were lots of things going on in my mind," Freire told Sherdog, "but the primary thing was the victory and [getting] a shot at a belt for the first time in my career. I'm going to be a champion. I'm going to take his belt."

Freire, 23, smoked Warren in the first round of a fight last June. Pitbull couldn't close it out and thwarted by Warren's ground attack over the next two rounds. With markedly improved takedown defense against Straus, Freire looked like a different fighter.

Straus, with a three-inch height advantage over the 5-foot-5 Freire, looked massive in the cage, but his size never took over. He executed a few nice throws, but Freire bounced right back up. When the fight was in the clinch, Pitbull more than held his own and by the third round he looked like the more powerful fighter.

The stoppage of the night was produced by Bellator's new light heavyweight champ. With 45 seconds left in the fight, Christian M'Pumbu caught the former champ with a right hook and pounded him out on the ground.

UFC 130 picks, Vegas-style: Will Hamill catch ‘Rampage’ sleeping at the wheel?

Seven fights to swoon for in the next six weeks

Starting on Saturday night, the MMA world will give fans six major events in six weeks before it takes a short summer break. Which fights will convince you to stay inside as the summer heats up?

Demetrious Johnson vs. Miguel Torres, UFC 130: I'll admit, I'm less than enthused about UFC 130. After injuries pulled Gray Maynard's championship rematch with Frankie Edgar, the card lost some luster, but I've also found that the cards I wasn't excited about have blown me away. This fight is exactly one of the bouts that will get me to change my mind. Though Torres has shown a more cautious style recently, he'll have to solve the problem of Johnson's wrestling. For Johnson, it's another chance to move up the UFC's bantamweight ladder against the former champion.

Clay Guida vs. Anthony Pettis, "The Ultimate Fighter" Finale: Pettis was promised a UFC title shot after winning the WEC strap, but those plans were put to the side when Maynard and Edgar fought to a draw. Now, he can take out his frustration with waiting on Clay Guida, who is just as eager to make Pettis feel unwelcome in the UFC.

Jon Olav Einemo vs. Dave Herman, UFC 131: Einemo's debut in the UFC is sure to turn heads. He can win on his feet, as a 6-foot-6 fighter who trains with the famed Golden Glory camp in Holland, or on the ground, as he won an ADCC submission wrestling world championship. His MMA career is limited, but it will be fun to see how he can put it all together in the Octagon this June.

Kenny Florian vs. Diego Nunes, UFC 131: The interesting part of this fight will come at weigh-ins, to see how Florian can handle the cut down to 145 lbs. after fighting at lightweight for years. Once he actually gets to the Octagon, Florian will face a tough test in Nunes, who is on a three-fight winning streak.

Gina Carano vs. Sarah D'Alelio, Strikeforce: The last time we saw Carano fight, she was being beat on by Strikeforce women's champ Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos. She's spent time working on her movie career. How will nearly two years of ring rust affect her?

Pat Barry vs. Cheick Kongo, UFC on Versus 4: One word comes to mind with this match-up: OWWWWW. Both fighters are capable of throwing painful, KO kicks. It will be interesting to see how the two defend each other, and how the massive height difference will come into play.

Dong Hyun Kim vs. Carlos Condit, UFC 132: I wish I had a well-thought-out reason why I'm so excited for this fight, but it's just that these two are capable of knocking people out. Hard. Kim hasn't had a KO win since UFC 84, but Condit has won his last two fights with a knockout and a TKO. I can't imagine this fight will go for three, full rounds.

These are the fights that are fight on my list. Which ones are you excited for? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Cain Velasquez believes Brock Lesnar will come back strong; thinks Shane Carwin was the right replacement at UFC 131

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The return of Brock Lesnar's issue with diverticulitis caught everyone off guard this week, taking him out of his UFC 131 headlining fight with Junior Dos Santos and plugging in his UFC 116 foe Shane Carwin.

The former UFC Heavyweight Champion has vowed that pulling out of this fight and battling this illness once again does not mean it will be the end of his career. Though there are more than enough naysayers, there is one man who believes Lesnar will come back stronger than ever, and that's the man that took his title, Cain Velasquez.

"It sucks, but it happens in this sport," Velasquez said in comments made to MMAFighting.com. "People get hurt all the time and pull out of fights. But he'll come back, and he'll come back stronger. It sucks right now, but we already have somebody tough coming up with Shane (replacing him)..."

"(Lesnar is) the type of guy that will always come back stronger. You go back, look at the film, see what you did wrong and go back and work on it. But I've always thought about both (Lesnar and Carwin)."

Velasquez believes the UFC made the right move in putting Carwin in for Lesnar next month, and he sees the fight taking a different tone than the original matchup would have provided.

"I think [they made the right call], yeah," Velasquez said. "He was next in line, for sure. He's a tough guy. I think it was a good call."

"Before [with Lesnar-Dos Santos], it was wrestler vs. striker. Now it's striker vs. striker ? but they're different. I think dos Santos is more technical and hits hard, but Carwin is a really hard puncher. You can't pound him out. So it's two hard hitters."

Those two hard hitters will do battle on June 11, and the winner will then meet Velasquez when the Champion is ready to return this fall.

Penick's Analysis: I'm firmly of the belief that Lesnar will be back and that he will fight again. He's got a competitive drive in him that will bring him back into the fold once he's able to get this issue dealt with. Velasquez knows he defeated a tough opponent to take the belt, even if he made it look easy, and now he knows he'll still be facing a dangerous opponent regardless of who leaves Vancouver the victor next month. Either matchup will make for an excellent title fight in October, and both are fights I can't wait to see.

Titan Fighting Championships 18 loses McFedries and Markham, gain Jake and Jared Rosholt

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

A pair of high profile removals from this week's Titan Fighting Championships 18 event, set to air live on HDNet, left Titan officials in a bind, but they've found replacements for each loss and are good to go for Friday's event.

UFC vets Drew McFedries and Rory Markham were each forced out of the event at the last minute, McFedries due to being hospitalized with an infection late last week and Markham for taking a film role that is taking him out of the country prior to Friday's event.

However, the organization managed to snag the Rosholt brothers, UFC vet Jake and his younger brother Jared, to step in for the card, as they face John Ott and Kirk Grinlinton, respectively.

"We were extremely disappointed when the management for Drew and Rory informed us of the news. However, this is the fight business and having promoted fights since the age of 24, I've dealt with a lot of hurdles in promoting shows," said Titan CEO Joe Kelly. "While losing Drew and Rory from the show hurts, we took the news in stride I am very excited that the fans in attendance at Memorial Hall and those watching live on HDNet are going to see two future stars in this sport step up on short notice and test themselves."

Jake Rosholt, a three time NCAA Division I wrestling champion at Oklahoma State University, made his MMA debut in 2007 and has compiled an 11-3 record since. Two of his losses came during his three fight stint in the UFC, but since his release he's won five of six fights, with all five victories coming in the first round. Rosholt meets John Ott on the card, who in March moved up in weight to face Bobby Lashley, losing a three round decision. Their fight will take place at a 200 lb. catchweight.

The younger Rosholt was a standout at Oklahoma State himself, earning All-American honors multiple times. Since making the transition to MMA, the heavyweight has won two consecutive fights, and is making a name for himself as a submission grappler.

"When you look at brother acts in MMA, it's clear that Ken and Frank Shamrock are the best brother-tandem to have ever grace this sport," Kelly said. "However, when the respective MMA careers of the Rosholt Brothers have come to an end, I have no doubt in my mind that Jake and Jared will surpass the Shamrocks as the greatest brother duo in MMA history. I believe that Jake Rosholt will return to the UFC and eventually claim the middleweight title and those that I know who have seen Jared Rosholt train tell me that he is going to be a future UFC Heavyweight Champion. Having two future UFC champions compete together on national television so early in their respective careers is going to be special."

The event, taking place from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Mo., airs live on HDNet beginning at 10PM ET.

White suggests Sonnen has been punished too harshly

Chael Sonnen's career is in limbo. The confusion over how his testosterone replacement therapy was handled and reported, plus a positive test following his UFC 117 loss to Anderson Silva, has him facing an indefinite period on the sidelines. Dana White broke his silence on last week's California State Athletic Commission ruling and didn't sound pleased.

"I'm pretty bummed out about the Chael Sonnen thing and the way that the whole thing was handled. You know, this guy… I don't know if there's ever been a penalty laid down, I mean Tyson, I think when Tyson bit the ear, Tyson got a year. Um… it's pretty crazy," White told Heavy.com.

White says Sonnen's getting a raw deal.

"Um… listen, it's not that he'd have to retire, but right now was his opportunity. This kid had the opportunity to coach The Ultimate Fighter, he had the opportunity to get a big fight set up, should he win that fight… everybody knows what happened with Anderson Silva, this was a key moment in this kid's career and me, personally, you know, you've heard me say it for the last almost 11 years, we always support whatever the athletic commission says," White said. "This kid got, this kid got it stuck to him, man. He paid his dues in every way shape and forum and, uh… I think he's been treated a bit unfairly."

The CSAC denied Sonnen after his most recent attempt at regaining his license to fight. It was thought initially that Sonnen would be unable to re-apply until the summer of 2012. The CSAC admitted it misinterpreted a rule and now Sonnen can try again in late June.

Frank Mir, Roy Nelson Put 'Friendship' to the Side at UFC 130

Filed under:

LAS VEGAS - Much is being made in the buildup to UFC 130 on Saturday about the friend vs. friend heavyweight bout between Frank Mir and Roy Nelson.

Make no mistake - the two Las Vegas natives and residents and frequent training partners are far from enemies. But as Nelson said Wednesday, let's not take this whole "friends" thing too far.

"It would be different if we were really friends - best friends," Nelson told MMA Fighting prior to the press conference for Saturday's pay-per-view at the MGM Grand. "There's a difference between business acquaintances and friends. I consider a friend any time we eat together at the same restaurant, or he's eaten at my house or I've eaten at his house. We train together - jiu-jitsu. It's like (a reporter) who interviews me - does that mean we're friends too?"

Thirty minutes later on the press conference dais, the two seemed chummy enough. And they even mock-hugged before their pose-down photo op. But Mir said for this particular fight, it affects more than just the two of them in the cage - it's the people in their inner circles.

"In this situation with Roy, it's difficult because we have a lot of mutual friends," Mir told MMA Fighting. "James Johnson is in his corner on Saturday night - the guy was one of my groomsmen in my wedding! So we have a lot of mutual relationships where I might not be his best friend, but we have mutual best friends that go back and forth."

And that, Mir said, affected how he approached the fight - not wanting to make any comments about Nelson, even in jest, that their mutual friends would take the wrong way.

"I think I've kind of kept, on purpose, any kind of poking or badgering to a minimum, not because I didn't want to fight him," Mir said. "I know Roy gets it. I get it. It's the close friends around us that I worry about that I'm going to have to see 20 years from now, people who are a godfather-of-my-kids-who-train-with-him type of scenario."

Nelson (15-5, 2-1 UFC), the Season 10 heavyweight winner of "The Ultimate Fighter," beat Mir eight years ago in a grappling tournament that had slipped under most radars until it was dredged up from the archives after the fight was booked. But both have acknowledged they're two completely different fighters than back then.

Mir, Nelson and UFC president Dana White joked Wednesday about the fight booking causing mini-battles over gym schedules and who would wear what color shorts on Saturday. But Mir (14-5, 12-5 UFC) said despite not having any lunch dates planned with Nelson, he's still traversing new territory with this fight.

"This will be the closest I've ever been to any of my opponents," Mir said. "I'm cordial with everybody - I try to be. But it's a fight."

Nelson said in this particular case, it all just comes down to one thing: Friendship may be friendship, but business is business.

"It's just one of those things," Nelson said. "You'd prefer to fight somebody that you really would rather derail their whole career. I have no ill will toward Frank. But it is what it is, and if the UFC wants you to fight whoever, then that's what you do to get paid."

Mike Swick welcomes Brazilian prospect Erick Silva at UFC 134 in Rio

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

American Kickboxing Academy product Mike Swick will make a return to action for the first time in 18 months at UFC 134, as Sherdog.com reports that he will welcome Brazilian welterweight prospect Erick Silva to the UFC on the card.

A veteran of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, Swick has been battling illnesses and injuries for the last several years, and due to that has been out of action since his February 2010 loss to Paulo Thiago at UFC 109. The loss was his second straight after posting a four fight winning streak since moving to the welterweight division three years ago.

Silva enters the UFC as one of the top prospects in the world at 170 lbs. The 26-year-old boasts a 12-1 record with one no contest, and is unbeaten in over four years. Of his 12 career wins, Silva has finished nine opponents and has seven submission wins to his credit.

UFC 134 takes place from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 27, headlined by a Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This is a good fight for both guys. Swick has been out of action for a long time, and after two straight losses he'll get a chance to show where he's at against a tough prospect. For Silva, he gets to debut against a longtime veteran known by the UFC fanbase. A win over Swick would be a big statement in his debut, and to do it in his home country would be huge as well.
