Cason vs. St-Preux set, Strikeforce Challengers 17 main card complete

A previously reported light heavyweight matchup between knockout artist Joe Cason and fellow prospect Ovince St-Preux is now official for Strikeforce Challengers 17.
Strikeforce officials recently announced the matchup, which completes the event's five-fight main card.

Strikeforce Challengers 17 takes place July 22 at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. The night's main card, including a trilogy headliner between Roger Bowling and Bobby Voelker, airs on Showtime.

Brett Rogers arrested for domestic violence charges

Brett Rogers, who lost to Josh Barnett just over a week ago in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, was reportedly arrested for charges connected to domestic violence. He allegedly hit and choked his wife badly enough that she blacked out, lost a tooth and sustained several wounds. From My Fox 9:

Brett Charles Rogers, 30, has been charged with assault in the third degree, domestic assault by strangulation and pattern of stalking conduct -- all felonies --in Dakota County. He was also charged with endangerment of a child, a gross misdameanor.

His wife blacked out from being choked, suffered a golf ball sized wound on her face among smaller wounds. The couples daughter had tried to intervene after she saw Rogers strike her mother.

Rogers' wife has been in his corner at his fights, including his last three losses in Strikeforce. She was emotional and with him in the cage on June 18 when Barnett's hand was raised after choking out Rogers.

Denial of therapeutic use exemption may have contributed to Marquardt's UFC exit

More than a month before he fought Dan Miller at UFC 128, Nate Marquardt went to the NJSACB and applied for a therapeutic use exemption to be allowed to continue prescribed testosterone as recommended by his personal doctor.

Marquardt received approval from the commission overseeing the pay-per-view event, but only on the condition that he submit to a series of tests both before and after the fight.

When one of those tests came back beyond the commission's acceptable limits for testosterone, the NJSACB denied Marquardt's application for an exemption. As it happened, the denial arrived the day before the weigh-ins for his bout at UFC on Versus 4.

Jake Shields Vs. Jake Ellenberger Rumored For Fall Matchup

By Chris Howie
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

After having his fifteen fight win streak snapped by Georges St. Pierre back in April, Jake Shields will look to step back into the Octagon this fall according to a report from MMAFighting.com.

Although the exact card is not known at this time, Shields is pegged to face surging welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger, who is riding a four fight win streak of his own since losing his UFC debut against Carlos Condit.

It is possible that the Jake vs. Jake bout could take place at what is expected to be UFC 138 on November 19th in San Jose, CA. This would be the companies debut in the city that was once predominately a Strikeforce city, meaning Shields is no stranger to the fans who passionately supported the Strikeforce brand.

Celeb jiu-jitsu showdown: Ashton Kutcher vs. ?Al Bundy,? who wins?

A guy breaks into your home and gets on top of you. Can you find a way to get yourself off the floor?

Here's a shocker. Ed O'Neill of "Al Bundy" fame from "Married with Children" would probably be standing in a matter of seconds and chances are Ashton Kutcher would have no shot of rising to his feet. You ask why? The 61-year-old O'Neill has been training jiu-jitsu for 15 years, meanwhile Kutcher is a novice, who borrowed a black belt, during this recent visit to Brazil.

Black Belt Magazine tells the story that O'Neil, who played a dumpy shoe salesman on FOX's hit television show, got hooked on jiu-jitsu during a quick visit to Rorian Gracie's gym in Torrance, Ca.

O'Neil was pushed by a producer/writer friend John Milius to visit the gym. Gracie put "Al Bundy" through the robber drill and he failed.

Taking the bait, he asked Gracie how he'd managed to maintain complete control (while on top of O'Neil). Once the principle was explained the simplicity of the art floored O'Neil. He set up an appointment to begin training and has been rolling ever since.

Black Belt reports that in 2007, O'Neil received his black belt.

"Ed has a vast knowledge of moves," Gracie said. "He has great execution of the techniques and does them with a certain level of ease. We're worked with this guy every single week for 15 years."

Maybe Kutcher, 33, will have his black belt in 15 years. The photo is from Rio de Janeiro where Kutcher stopped in to visit a Carlson Gracie disciple.

Ashton Kutcher, [was in] yesterday, June 13, [to see] Ricardo de la Riva, in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. Ashton showed that understands the subject and trained very well with the black belts of the academy.

Ashton learned the secret of one of the world's most famous guards, the De la Riva guard, which was demonstrated by the master himself, to the finest detail.

PENICK: From gameshow winning Joe to MMA Pro, Charlie Brenneman gets massive opportunity at UFC on Versus 4

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Staff08Penick_120_175.jpg
Charlie Brenneman steps into the cage tonight at UFC on Versus 4 with a massive opportunity in front of him. Four years after making the move to being a professional MMA fighter, Brenneman has gotten a chance to fight a top contender in Rick Story on a day's notice on a nationally televised card on Versus, and should he pull off the upset, he'll shoot himself up in stature in the UFC's welterweight division.

In an interesting twist of fate, it was a Spike TV program that acted as a catalyst for him to get into the sport. In 2006, Brenneman competed on Spike's "Pros vs. Joes," and after winning the first season of the show he quit his teaching job to train full time as a fighter. In short order he had moved to the professional ranks, and railed off five straight wins to begin his career before a training injury almost cut it short.

Brenneman was nearly blinded after a high kick in sparring broke his orbital bone, but after undergoing emergency surgery to repair the damage - which included multiple plates being put into his face - Brenneman returned to action. A loss to fellow UFC on Versus 4 competitor John Howard in his return bout led him to joining a true fight camp after having previously handled his own training, and that decision helped him get to the UFC with a six fight win streak.

Since making his debut, Brenneman has posted victories over Jason High and Amilcar Alves, sandwiching the wins around only his second career loss, which came by way of TKO against Johny Hendricks last August.

That 2-1 mark in the Octagon brought him to tonight's event, where he was scheduled to meet Canadian welterweight T.J. Grant. However, an illness to Grant pulled him from the event at the last minute this week, and Brenneman was told to stay close to weight in case something happened to one of the six other welterweights on the card.

As his luck would have it, headliner Nate Marquardt was pulled from the card prior to the weigh-ins. Being on weight himself, Brenneman jumped at the opportunity to meet Rick Story, and has gone from an un-televised preliminary card fight to no fight at all to fighting one of the top fighters in the division in Story.

He's got an extremely difficult task ahead of him on Sunday night, but the element of surprise and lack of preparation time for an opponent is something he shares with Story, and that could work in Brenneman's favor as well as it could work against him. Because neither has been preparing for the other, there are a lot of unknowns for each coming into the fight, and if Brenneman can use that to his advantage coming in he could potentially pull off a massive upset and make for one hell of a story of his own.

Nate Marquardt out of UFC on Versus 4, Rick Story now fights Charlie Brenneman; card gets new main event

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Nate_Marquardt_15.jpg
The scheduled main event for tomorrow's UFC on Versus 4 card from Pittsburgh's Consol Energy Center is off, as MMAJunkie.com reports that Nate Marquardt is a late scratch just hours before today's weigh-ins.

SBNation.com's Luke Thomas reports that Marquardt has not been "medically cleared," but his camp released a statement stating it's a setback but he'll be looking to return as soon as possible.

"Nate is really disappointed," the statement read. "He really was looking forward to making his welterweight debut, and he plans to be back in there as soon as possible."

With Marquardt out, Story will now meet Charlie Brenneman on the card, and the heavyweight bout between Pat Barry and Cheick Kongo will now headline the event.

Brenneman was removed from the card earlier this week after his second scheduled opponent, T.J. Grant, was forced out of the event with an illness.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This is a major, major blow to this card. It was a very good main event fight, and clearly the most important fight on the card, and now Marquardt's welterweight debut has been delayed. If it was an issue with his weight cut then he'll need to reconsider whether that's the right move, but regardless it's just a really unfortunate development here. I'm glad for Brenneman who is now getting a fight, but it's a major step up for him, and Story goes from taking a main event fight to being in one that doesn't have any upside for him and that could be dangerous on a day's notice. With Barry-Kongo now in the main event, the broadcast is going to suffer in the ratings. This is just not good news in any capacity.

UPDATE: Joe Rogan told the crowd at the weigh-ins that Marquardt failed a physical before the fight, though his management team says it is nothing serious.

Attonito takes decision, Lauzon gets quick sub at UFC on Versus 4

PITTSBURGH -- Like his beloved Red Sox on Sunday in Pittsburgh, Joe Lauzon was a big winner at UFC on Versus on Sunday night.

He showed off his striking abilities with a dominant display, knocking down Warburton with a straight right followed by a left. He then jumped on him top of him, and followed up with a perfect kimura to end the bout at 1:58 in the first round.

"We were working on not rushing things, keeping my balance and staying fundamentally sound. I hit pretty hard, but we had about five or six things we wanted to work in rotation. The first one I threw was the one that landed and put him away. I'm always trying to hunt down submissions. I never leave it to the judges," Lauzon said after the bout.

Attonito takes decision

Rich Attonito won a decision over Daniel Roberts in a bout that started strong but ended weakly. He won the bout with the odd judges' card of 29-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

Roberts started strong in the first round but slowed down considerably as the round wore on. At first he threw big, impressive kicks, but was taken down by Attonito by the end of the round. Roberts began with a takedown in the second and took Attonitio's back, but could not sink in a choke. Attonito reversed him and used the position to ground and pound, landing several big shots in the final seconds of the round.

Attonito grew aggressive in the third round, peppering Johnson with leg kicks and punches. The exhausted Roberts' only defense was to move away, but that was hardly effective. Attonito then knocked Roberts to the ground and followed up with an onslaught of punches. Roberts survived and got back to his feet, but was very wobbly. He staggered around the cage and threw strikes where he could while Attonito continued to throw intermittent strikes. Roberts tried for a takedown, but Attonito wanted to keep the fight on the ground. In the final seconds, Attonito took the fight to the ground, but was unable to do anything to put the bout in danger.

Cormier takes next step by picking apart Monson

Daniel Cormier is taking baby steps working his way towards being legitimate heavyweight contender and he's passing each test with flying colors. Tonight, he avoided the clutches of submission artist Jeff Monson and lit up the veteran with a variety of punches and kicks. Cormier cruised to the eighth victory of his young career with a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all cards.

Cormier's arsenal of left hooks, right hand leads and powerful clinch work tired the 40-year-old. He outlanded Monson 120-40. His combinations confused and startled the former UFC title contender. Cormier also made good on 37-of-47 kicks.

By the end of the fight, Monson's face was all marked up and he suffered a cut on the top of his head.

UFC on Versus 4?s Three Stars: Kongo, Brenneman and Lauzon

UFC on Versus 4′s Three Stars: Kongo, Brenneman and LauzonThe UFC's first trip into Pittsburgh was upended at the last minute because of Nate Marquardt's failed physical, but still had a wild main event to cap off an interesting evening of fights. Who stood out?

No. 1 star -- Cheick Kongo: An eight-month layoff from fighting due to injuries didn't slow the Frenchman, as Kongo scored a comeback knockout that will go down in UFC history. It earned him an extra $50,000 in a Knockout of the Night bonus.

No. 2 star -- Charlie Brenneman: Being prepared paid off for "The Spaniard." After his bout with T.J. Grant was called off at the last minute, he stayed ready to fight. It paid off, as he was the UFC's savior after the Marquardt fiasco. He seized the moment, using his wrestling to dominate an unprepared Rick Story in front of Brenneman's home crowd.

No. 3 star -- Joe Lauzon: Apparently, Lauzon had plans for Sunday night because he took out Curt Warburton with a quickness. He showed off a well-rounded game, knocking down Warburton with punches, then turned him into an unwilling contortionist with a kimura.

Who were your Three Stars from the event? Speak your mind in the comments or on Facebook.

PSAC indefinitely suspends Marquardt, says UFC, fighter had six weeks to get clearance

PITTSBURGH - The Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission still won't reveal exactly what forced Nate Marquardt out of tonight's UFC on Versus 4 event, but PSAC executive director Gregory Sirb did reveal the fighter was given plenty of time to address the issue.

And after failing to fulfill the PSAC'S requirements, the commission has now put Marquardt on indefinite suspension.

"He's been put on suspension," Sirb told MMAjunkie.com. "When he meets those requirements, he'll be taken off. How long of a suspension (it will be) is up to him."
