Edson Barboza agrees with ref stoppage in UFC 146 upset loss to Jamie Varner

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_74.jpg
One of the more shocking results in recent UFC history came last weekend at UFC 146, as former WEC Champion Jamie Varner defeated previously unbeaten Edson Barboza in the first round on short notice.

Varner had been released by Zuffa at the tail end of 2010 when many of his WEC cohorts were brought into the UFC, and he had come near retirement after a decision loss to Dakota Cochrane in 2011. However, after two stoppage victories got him the last minute call up to face Barboza, Varner made the most of it.

It was a shocking display considering Varner's checkered recent history, along with Barboza coming off of a "Knockout of the Year" leader over Terry Etim in January. For Barboza, the fight was a bit of a wake up call, and it's something he doesn't plan on having happen again.

"I couldn't fight, I didn't do what my coach told me to," Barboza said in an interview with Tatame.com. "I froze. It happens to any fighter. Even because I had never been that prepared for a fight like I was this time. I had an amazing training camp, my cardio was great and I really was 100 percent. But I got stuck."

"I'm learning many things, I'll analyze it and correct my flaws. Next fight you'll see a much more experienced Edson and also more prepared."

The stoppage came after Varner hurt Barboza with several strikes, then rushed him against the cage with another flurry. Barboza insists he wasn't out, but he ultimately agreed with the referee's decision in the fight.

"I wasn't out, I was seeing things clearly," he said. "But, after, when I watched the tape as a fan, I thought he made the right [decision] even because I wasn't moving nor defending myself. I was aware but I wasn't defending myself."

Penick's Analysis: Barboza's got nothing but time right now. At only 26-year-old, he's still got years to hone his skills, close up holes in his game, and become an even better version of what we had seen up to the UFC 146 card. Every fighter loses; it's a part of the sport of MMA. No one is ever going to go undefeated at the highest levels of the sport, and for Barboza the important thing now is to bounce back in a strong and positive way. This was an unexpected and mostly shocking loss, but he absolutely can still be a force in the lightweight division. He ran into a former WEC Champ who still has something left in the tank on Saturday night, and there's no shame in that. Now it's time to get back to work.

Manny Pacquiao Dominates Shane Mosley

by Michael David SmithManny Pacquiao defeated Shane Mosley via a unanimous decision in Las Vegas.Manny Pacquiao showed once again why he's the biggest attraction in boxing, dominating Shane Mosley on Saturday night to win a one-sided unanimous decision in the biggest fight of the year.

Although Mosley came out fighting hard with a good first round, it was all Pacquiao from there on. Pacquiao knocked Mosley down in the third and dominated the fight throughout. Technically Mosley knocked Pacquiao down in the 10th round, but in reality Pacquiao fell when Mosley tripped him, and the referee made a mistake in calling it a knockdown. In reality, Mosley never had Pacquiao in any trouble, at any point in the fight.

All three judges awarded it to Pacquiao by lopsided scores: 119-108, 120-108 and 120-107. According to the pay-per-view broadcast, Pacquiao landed exactly 100 more punches than Mosley did (182 to 82) and threw more than twice as many punches (552 to 260).

Shane Carwin ready for "early fall" UFC return, promises "new and improved" fighting game

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

CarwinShane_CG150_4.jpg
Former Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Shane Carwin hasn't been in action since his decision loss to Junior dos Santos last June. Continued issues with his back led to surgery last fall, but he's getting ready to make his return, and he says he's feeling better than ever.

"I informed UFC Matchmaker (Joe Silva) that I would like to fight in Early Fall 2012," Carwin wrote on his personal website. "I would like to be able to fight every three or four months. Barring injury I intend to leave the UFC octagon and head back to the Grudge Training Center to continue the climb. I have spent my entire career dealing with injuries sustained through Football. I am 100% and I feel like a younger version of my former self. The UFC should look into adding some padding in the gloves because I plan on crushing my opponents."

Carwin's heavy hands and his wrestling base led to a 12-0 start to his MMA career. That streak was capped off by four wins in the UFC that brought him the Interim UFC Heavyweight Championship. However, his string of immensely fast finishes led to little development in his overall game. That's something he's hoping to remedy as he prepares for his return.

"My entire career is shorter then some Pride Fights," he opined. "I have somehow managed to contend for the UFC HW Title with less than an hour of actual fighting. On one hand that is amazing on the other it kind of scary to think I am facing seasoned veterans with limited experience. Talk about swimming with the sharks. The time off has allowed me to focus on me. Work on the fundamentals of the sport and improve. Maybe most important, to fall in love with the sport again."

"No one ever 'wants' or 'needs' back surgery but I did 'need' the time to improve my skills," he continued. "Being a good wrestler with heavy hands is only a fraction of skills needed to become a World Champion. I am certain when I come back you will see a more diverse and hungry fighter. I will not be worried about my extra pounds causing cardio problems, and I will not stumble on the way up this mountain top."

"You are going to see the Old Shane with new and improved skills fighting because it's what I love to do."

Penick's Analysis: Carwin's hands have always been a game changing weapon, and he came immensely close to defeating Brock Lesnar in the same fashion Cain Velasquez did when the two met in 2010. He's gotten lost in the heavyweight conversation since he's been defeated twice in a row, and because he's been out of action almost a year already. However, a rejuvenated Carwin can still be a very real threat to anyone in the heavyweight division, and when he returns this fall we'll see whether or not he's added anything to his overall skill set.

Manager: Antonio Silva's fight-altering UFC 146 cut required just three stitches

That cut - the one changed the course of the fight and left Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva drenched in blood at this past weekend's UFC 146 event - wasn't as bad as it looked.

"It wasn't really a big cut," Silva's manager, Alex Davis, told MMAjunkie.com Radio. "It was right between the eyes. It's a very fleshy part. It bleeds a lot. He's a big guy, and his head is very well irrigated, so it was a blood bath.

"But it only (needed) three stitches. It wasn't that bad, but it looked bad on TV."

MOORE: Booking the UFC's September Return to the UK

By: Dan Moore, MMATorch UK Contributor

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_71.jpg
The UFC is coming back to the UK on September 29, so I thought what the hell, why not play Joe Silva for the day and see what I can come up with to entertain the MMA diehards who'll be in attendance. I've tried to pick realistic fights for this Nottingham event. I haven't picked unrealistic match ups like Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones, however much I'd love to see that live. Every fight I've selected has been carefully considered (well I thought about each one for five minutes, so does that count?). I've taken into account previous results, fighter reputation and current UFC standing, and most importantly, whether or not the fighters already have a fight scheduled too close to Sept 29 (Step forward Michael Bisping, Ross Pearson, Terry Etim and Vaughan Lee).

Considering the already scheduled PPV events later this year, I have based my picks on this card being a Fuel TV event. Although unconfirmed, it's been reported today that this is the most likely outcome, and we won't get another numbered event. Last year I'd have been very concerned for the quality of the card, but not anymore with the Fox TV deal now in place. Spike TV used to air UK events via tape delay in the US, which at times impacted on the name value of those fighting on UK cards. Fuel, though, like with the Sweden card, will show the event live in the US on a Saturday afternoon. That still won't guarantee an influx of championship fights and superstars, but it's a start. We also know this card will be predominantly filled with British fighters, along with two or three big names fighting on the main card. I can live with that. It's also worth noting that Dustin Poirier vs. The Korean Zombie headlined a Fuel TV card and look how that turned out!

Here we go, starting from the bottom of the card, and finishing with my main event choice, these are my picks:

FACEBOOK PRELIMS

Azamat Gashimov (7-1) vs. Roland Delorme (8-1)

TUF fighter Roland Delorme caused a bit of an upset winning his last UFC fight over the heavily favoured Nick Denis and is currently 2-0 in the organisation. Having been submitted by T.J. Dillashaw, the Canadian didn't make much of an impact during that series but he's a fighter on the rise. Denis had him constantly rocked if the first round of their fight but Delorme impressively pulled himself together and pulled off an outstanding rear naked choke to get the win. Azamat Gashimov was signed earlier this year, but pulled out of his debut fight on the Fuel TV 3 card due to injury. By all accounts he should be good to go for September, and this will be a good first test for the Russian.

Jack Marshman (10-1) vs. Magnus Cedenblad (10-4)

I'm not sure what his contract situation is with BAMMA, but I like Jack Marshman and I'd love to see him on a UFC card. Yes I am a little bit biased because of his military connections, but he's young, talented, and only recently suffered his first loss against the vastly more experienced Tom Watson in a BAMMA World Middleweight Championship fight. Not bad progress for someone who's first fight was in early 2010. Swedish fighter Magnus Cedenblad was completely outclassed by the bigger, more powerful Francis Carmont in his UFC debut, but he's going to get another chance to shine, and it's likely to be on this card. This is a winnable fight for both of them and its a solid undercard fight featuring an up and coming homegrown talent.

Andy Ogle (8-1) vs. Akira Corassani (9-3)

We all know now that Ogle is going to get a deserved spot on this card. He missed out on a fight this Friday because of injury, and Dana White (whilst being many things) is generally a man who delivers on a promise. Corassani, another TUF fighter, was scheduled to fight Jason Young on the Sweden card but pulled out injured. Corassani has a solid stand up base with one punch knockout power, but in my opinion he's nowhere near as good as Al Iaquinta, Ogle's last opponent on TUF. This is a very winnable fight for Ogle. He's got good exposure thanks to TUF, and a win for him will get the partizan crowd on their feet.

Simeon Thoresen (17-2-1) vs. Pascal Krauss (10-1)

John Hathaway dominated Pascal Krauss to the point some fans might have wondered if we'd ever see Krauss in another UFC fight. That wasn't my opinion because this kid is good, but that opinion is likely more a testament to the performance of Hathaway, and less about that of Krauss. The German is very talented, but on the night he simply came up against a highly motivated Hathaway with a point to prove. Krauss has spent a lot of time training with Duke Roufus over the past year, and if that camp rates him highly, that's more than good enough for me. Simeon Thoresen looked great in his debut win over Besam Yousef securing a submission victory after dominating from top position for most of the fight. Most of this fight might be spent on the ground, but I'll take that if one of them pulls off a quality submission to get the win.

Jason Young (9-5) vs. Bart Palaszewski (36-15)

Young was thrown into the lions den for his first two UFC fights, matching up against Dustin Poirer and Michihiro Omigawa, with both ending in UD defeats. He did better than anyone ever expected in both fights and duly got a deserved third fight with Eric Wisely to get his first win. His performance against Wisely was superb, and for me he won all three rounds convincingly even if some disagreed about the third. Palaszewski is extremely experienced, hard as nails and he loves to stand and trade (ask Tyson Griffin). He's a very tough opponent for anyone, but one that Young can outmaneuver with his speed and kickboxing skills. A win over Palaszewski would be the perfect platform for Young to start making inroads towards the Featherweight Top 15 rankings.

MAIN CARD

John Maguire (18-3) vs. Matt Brown (14-11)

Who wouldn't want to see a bit of Gypsy Jiu-Jitsu to start off the main card, especially a crowd favorite like Maguire who's on a seven fight win streak? Despite showing flaws in his stand up against DeMarques Johnson, who needs boxing skills when you can submit your opponent like Maguire did in Sweden? Maguire is 2-0 in the UFC and there is no need to throw him in with a really top name just yet. Matt Brown is perfect as his next opponent. Brown has been around the block several times and he's a lower level gatekeeper well accustomed to the ways of the Octagon. He recently nullified the karate kid hype machine Stephen Thompson. His high level Judo and BJJ will provide a stern test for Maguire, and that's before mentioning he's equally competent in the stand up. Brown is very well rounded and this fight will tell us just how good Maguire really is.

Paul Sass (13-0) vs. Evan Dunham (13-2)

Dana White said it's time to give Paul Sass a step up in competition, so who better than Evan Dunham? Jacob Volkmann came into the fight on Saturday riding a five fight win streak, but had absolutely no answer for Sass, despite knowing full well what the Englishman intended to do. Sass is electric and any opponent, however skilled, is going to be very vary of taking a fight with Sass to the ground. It wasn't too long ago that Dunham was being touted around as the next big thing, but consecutive defeats to Sean Sherk (disputable!) and Melvin Guillard (indisputable!) halted that momentum. Dunham has won two on the bounce, is a very skilled fighter who would provide Sass with his toughest test to date. Should Dunham not be available my back up plan is for Sass to match up with T.J. Grant who is fresh off a win over Carlo Prater, and someone who is very underrated for some strange reason.

John Hathaway (16-1) vs. Paulo Thiago (14-4)

I like the idea of Hathaway facing the winner of the Brenneman vs. Silva fight which takes place on UFC on FX 3 card in 10 days or so. However, I am steering clear of matching Hathaway with anyone who's already scheduled to fight, therefore I am ruling out both Rick Story and Dong Hyun Kim for that same reason. That doesn't leave too many options other than Amir Sadollah (I saw the Lopez fight so NO to that) and my final choice Paulo Thiago. Although the UFC doesn't like to match up winners vs. last fight losers, I hope they make an exception for this. I enjoy watching Thiago fight, he's always game and he has some name value to make this fight worth it. As I've mentioned before Hathaway looked very polished in his comeback win over Krauss. He is the most naturally gifted athelete of all of the UK fighters in the UFC. He also has the most rounded game after Michael Bisping, which is impressive considering Hathaway is still only 24 years old. If Hathaway can overcome Thiago (and I suspect he does), then he moves onto a fight with a top 10-15 opponent by Jan 2013. After that the sky is the limit for the London Shootfighter.

Brad Pickett (21-6) vs. Michael McDonald (15-1)

One Punch is quality and if I had my way he'd be fighting Urijah Faber in July for the interim title and not Renan Barao. Right, fan head off and sensible head on, Barao convincingly beat Pickett and duly deserves his shot. What Pickett needs to do is get a convincing win for himself to get a shot as the next contender. With the bantamweight division lacking a little depth, only a few names roll off the tongue as potential opponents for the Londoner. Jabouin, Mizugaki, Bowles, Torres, those are all possibilities, but my first choice has to be McDonald. Injury concerns aside, this would be an awesome fight to make to set up a No. 1 contender for the Barao-Faber winner. McDonald is uber talented and dismantled Miguel Torres in rapid fashion last month. Both are extremely exciting and equally deserving of their places in the top 10 rankings. Dana White is a big fan of both so matching them up is a real possibility. My only concern is that the fight is too good not to put on a PPV event. It certainly deserves that kind of profile.

Dan Hardy (24-10 (1)) vs. Che Mills (14-5 (1 NC))

As I said in my blog this week, my first choice of opponent for Hardy would have been Siyar Bahadurzada, but sadly (for us) he's already booked to fight at UFC 149. I've also read loads of other suggested opponents for Hardy including Diego Sanchez, Thiago Alves, Martin Kampman, Matt Brown (already picked, see above) and even Paul Daley! Whilst Brown wouldn't be a bad choice (there's history) I just want to see Hardy face someone who's only going to stand and trade, and not look to expose any Hardy weakness like his wrestling defense. Hardy was terrific on Saturday night, he looked far more evolved than I've ever seen him before. His clinch skills, the patience and his general fight persona were a joy to see. Therefore why match him up with another top level opponent just one fight removed from a four fight losing streak?

Che Mills is all about the stand up and he'd be a great match up for Hardy, and for us fans. I would be amazed if it lasted longer than a round with either fighter capable of getting a KO. Both Hardy and Mills execute excellent kickboxing and Mills is equally adept at finishing an opponent as he did at UFC 138. Whilst I'm not always a fan of pitching two UK fighters against each other, this is the UFC and it's got to happen every now and then. This is a great fight to make and as a co main event, the crowd would lap this up from start to finish so I'm running with this one. For the record I've made it a co main event over more deserving fights for two reasons. Hardy and Nottingham.

Alexander Gustafsson (14-1) vs. Quinton Jackson (32-10)

There are reasons why this prediction is the most unlikely of my choices, but who wouldn't want to see this fight live as a main event. Rampage is on his way out of the UFC with one fight left on his contract. Although his vocal plea for an early release has quietened down recently, it's no secret that he wants out. My opinion is "who cares?" but that's no reason not to give him a decent send off in front of the UK fans. As you know, Rampage fights out of the UK based Wolfslair team, and lest we forget, has already fought on a UK card back in 2007. Even Rampage must realize his days of headlining a numbered PPV event passed him by when he lost to Jon Jones last year. By appearing on this card, at least he gets to go out as a main event star, in a blaze of publicity, and not lower down the pecking order on a numbered event in Las Vegas.

One thing that might prove difficult when it comes to persuading Rampage to take the fight is the opponent I'm suggesting. Alexander Gustafsson is a beast and is on his way up, watching Rampage on the way down. The Swede stepped up when it counted in front of his hometown fans and delivered a very convincing win over Thiago Silva. Rampage aside, I can't see who else is available right now for AG to fight. Only Rashad Evans stands out and I very much doubt that's going to happen this year. Rampage is another top named opponent for Gustafsson and a convincing win would enhance his claims for a title shot at either Jon Jones or Dan Henderson. Fighting on the September card also puts his schedule nicely in line with the two I just mentioned who fight each other at UFC 151 early the same month.

UFC to Nottingham, England on Sept. 29, could be Fuel TV card

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The UFC will officially head to Nottingham, England on Sept. 29, as officials announced over the weekend that they will head to the Capital FM Arena.

Though the television outlet for the event has not yet been set, MMAJunkie.com reports that it may be a Fuel TV event. Regardless, the event will more than likely air live in North America, instead of a tape delayed card as was the case with UK events on Spike TV.

Ronda Rousey shares why you should always call when you say you will

Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has made quite a name for herself. She won the belt from Miesha Tate in March, and since then has appeared on "The Ultimate Fighter," in magazines and at UFC and Strikeforce shows. As she became famous, someone from her past suddenly reappeared. On Instagram, Rousey shared how an old beau contacted her out of the blue and how she responded.

Let this be a lesson to men everywhere. Always give the courtesy call, because you never know when a woman will become a famous mixed martial artist who is capable of embarrassing you and breaking your arm.

Strikeforce "Rockhold vs. Kennedy" tickets on sale this week; three new fights added to prelim card

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Luke_Rockhold_180_2.jpg
Strikeforce heads to Portland, Oregon this July with two title fights on Showtime, and on Tuesday they announced the official on-sale date for tickets, along with three new fights for the card on July 14.

Tickets for the card, coming to the Rose Garden in Portland, go on sale to the public this Friday, June 1, with prices ranging from $40-$125. UFC Fight Club members have access to tickets on Wednesday, May 30, while UFC and Strikeforce Newsletter subscribers have access on Thursday, May 31.

The main Showtime card for the event is headlined by a Middleweight Title bout between Luke Rockhold and Tim Kennedy, with a co-main event for the vacant Strikeforce Welterweight Championship between a debuting Nate Marquardt and Tyron Woodley. Rounding out the main card are middleweight bouts pitting Keith Jardine against Roger Gracie and Robbie Lawler against Lorenz Larkin.

"The Pacific Northwest is home to great MMA fans and we're excited to bring an incredible event to Portland this July," said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker in Tuesday's press release. "With Luke Rockhold versus Tim Kennedy for the middleweight title and undefeated Tyron Woodley against Nate Marquardt for the vacant welterweight crown, there's no doubt that we?re bringing something special to the Rose Garden Arena. Having Keith Jardine, Robbie Lawler and Roger Gracie also on the card makes this one of the most stacked cards of the summer!"

In addition to those four fights, the event will feature a number of preliminary card fights, which will air live on Showtime Extreme prior to the main card broadcast. Three of those fights are now official, as Pat Healy takes on Mizuto Hirota, Jordan Mein meets Tyler Stinson, and Jason High returns to action against Nate Moore.

Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez II likely after respective UFC 146 wins

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

VelasquezCain_180_7.jpg
A fantastic performance at UFC 146 may be bringing Cain Velasquez right back into a title fight with the man who took the UFC Heavyweight Championship from him last November, Junior dos Santos.

UFC President Dana White commented on the possibility of the rematch following impressive performances from both men on Saturday night, and said that fight makes sense as the next bout for each of them. There's no word on when the fight could happen, but it'll likely be in the fall.

Dos Santos defended the title successfully in the night's main event, defeating Frank Mir by TKO in the second round in a solid, Championship performance. But it was Velasquez who really shined on Saturday night, making an argument for his 64-second loss to JDS being an isolated result, and not one that's necessarily going to be repeated in a rematch.

He absolutely destroyed Strikeforce import Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, putting on an extended three and a half minute beating before finally putting him away. After scoring an immediate takedown, Velasquez turned on his ground and pound attack. Then he landed an elbow that opened a nasty cut in the middle of Silva's eyes, leading to a complete bloodbath inside the Octagon.

Silva tried to fight through it, but Velasquez's attack was relentless. He continued to attack with punches and elbows, finally forcing him to turtle up and finishing it off with a flurry of punches. It was masterful, and he just may be seen as an even fight in the rematch with JDS.

Penick's Analysis: The only other sensible option is another rematch for dos Santos, and that's Fabricio Werdum, but I think Velasquez has the better argument right now. With how he destroyed Silva, he really did seem like a completely different fighter than the one who showed up in November, and there's reason to believe the November fight wasn't him at his best. A rematch may not immediately sell as well because of how the first fight went, but it's a fight I'm intrigued to see again after Saturday night.

Strikeforce's Cormier welcomes fights with Emelianenko, Kharitonov, Rizzo or Sylvia

Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix champion Daniel Cormier is far too beaten up to dwell on his future at this moment.

Five grueling rounds with Josh Barnett earlier this month at "Strikeforce: Heavyweight Grand Prix Final" left him with a broken right hand (his third in eight months), a split eyelid that winked to the press in red, and the biggest win of his brief fight career.

But when he does return for his "plus-one" fight in Strikeforce, he has some potential opponents in mind.

Roy Nelson?s Beard has plenty to say

Roy Nelson got a chance to speak at Thursday's UFC 146 press conference, but his beard remained silent. That is, until now. In a Cagewriter exclusive, Roy Nelson's Beard (RNB) spoke about its past, future, and what it brings to Nelson's game.

Cagewriter: How are you feeling today?

RNB: Good. Full. Ready to take on Dave Herman.

CW: How long have you been with Roy?

RNB: Well, I've been a part of his life for some time, but it was just in the past year or so that Roy really let me shine. He and I push each other to make each other great. It's truly a symbiotic relationship.

CW: What do you bring to his MMA game?

RNB: What DON'T I bring to his game? Striking, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, I taught him all of that. When he and his coaches come up with his game plan, they turn to me for advice. TKOing "Cro Cop"? That was all me.

CW: So then do you also take the blame for the fact he's lost three of his last four bouts?

RNB: Well, we're a team. We lose together, y'know? It's not just Roy out there. It's me, the belly, the mullet.

CW: Is there ever a rivalry between you?

RNB: Well, I'll let you in on a secret. The belly is TOTALLY jealous of me. He always used to get all the attention, but since Roy has been getting in better shape, he's lost prominence. Now it's all eyes on me.

CW: Has Roy talked to you about the future? Will he definitely keep you around or is there discussion of ... a razor?

RNB? Why would you ask such a thing? That's sick. Seriously. A razor? To what? Shave me off? You don't shave me off. You don't get rid of a glorious beard like this one. Are you crazy. I'm done. Interview's over.

CW: Well, thanks for your time.

MMA and motocross matched up in Montana promotion (VIDEO)

In Billings, Mont., a rather creative promoter came up with a way to combine two sports guaranteed to make spectators say, "WOOOOOO!" MMA and motocross. (If you want to cut the suspense, cut to the 23-second mark.)

Your eyes do not deceive you. That is a fairly normal MMA bout in a cage going on with bikers doing flips over the cage. My stomach was in my mouth every time they went over the cage, hoping that the bikers made the leap. Of course, they did every time.

Promoters are always trying new ways to bring fans into MMA. Kudos to the creator of Backflips and Beatdowns for coming up with a creative way to share MMA with the masses, even if it does make me worry about bikes dropping on the heads of fighters.

Thanks, Middle Easy.

UFC 146 Prelims Results: Paul Sass ends Jacob Volkmann's lightweight win streak, Brown tops Pineda on Facebook

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Paul Sass put an end to Jacob Volkmann's undefeated run in the lightweight division on Saturday night, notching his ninth career win by triangle choke at UFC 146.

Volkmann brought the fight to the ground early after a few exchanges on the feet, and tried to work a controlling top game. He landed several strikes, and held position, but as he tried to drive Sass' head to the cage he left his left arm wrapped around Sass' body.

The submission acumen of the Brit was on full display as he used that slight opening to lock on the triangle choke/armbar combination, forcing Volkmann to tap immediately. The win kept Sass undefeated at 13-0, while Volkmann drops to 14-3 (5-3 in the UFC).

Also on the night's Facebook prelims, former WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown picked up his second straight win in the UFC with a decision over Daniel Pineda to open the card.

The back and forth affair saw Brown's size and strength advantage edge Pineda's speed and reversals, taking it with scores of 29-28 across the board.
