Gus Johnson Signs With Fox but Stays With Showtime

by Michael David SmithLast week it was revealed that Gus Johnson's contract with CBS had expired, and on Tuesday morning it was reported that Johnson has accepted a job at Fox. But that doesn't mean he's done as the voice of mixed martial arts on Showtime, the sister network of CBS.

Sources told MMAFighting.com that Johnson's contract with CBS was for basketball and football, and that his deal to call fights (both MMA and boxing) for Showtime was a separate contract. That contract is still in effect, and Johnson will call Saturday night's Andre Ward-Arthur Abraham boxing match for Showtime. Although Showtime hasn't yet announced who will broadcast its next MMA show (a June 18 Strikeforce card), Johnson is expected to call that event as well.

Theoretically, it's even possible that Johnson could be back on the CBS airwaves if CBS ever aired another Strikeforce fight: When Johnson called EliteXC and Strikeforce fights on CBS in the past, that was part of his Showtime deal. It's probably a long shot that we'd see Johnson back on CBS, however.

UFC Champ Jon Jones sentenced in DWI crash in New York

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones appeared in court on Tuesday morning in Binghamton, New York, for sentencing stemming from a guilty plea to DWI.

According to Binghamton's PressConnects.com, Jones received a fine of $1,000, and will have to install ignition interlock devices in all of his vehicles. Additionally, Jones will have his license suspended for six months, and he'll need to complete a victim impact panel within 90 days.

Jones was arrested on the morning of May 19 after crashing his Bentley into a utility pole. He was taken into custody on suspicion of DWI, though he did not submit to breathalyzer or blood testing from the police. He later plead guilty to the misdemeanor DWI charge, with this sentencing being a part of that plea deal.

On top of the fine and the ignition interlock devices - which essentially act as a breathalyzer in the vehicle, disabling it from starting if a driver blows a certain level - Jones will also have to pay $6,563.62 in restitution to the utility company regarding the pole he crashed into.

The 25-year-old Champion commented on Twitter following today's proceedings, writing "Blessed to still have the full support of Broom County, my fans, and my DWI case officially behind me. Moving forward."

Jones returns to the Octagon on September 1, defending his UFC Light Heavyweight Championship for a fourth time in a bout against Dan Henderson at UFC 151.

Penick's Analysis: With the case officially behind him, Jones now can work on moving forward, learning from this major mistake, and so long as it never happens again it's not an issue. The entire saga was unfortunate, and certainly disappointing, but it's not something he's incapable of coming back from, and his fans just now have to hope the summer's proceedings haven't been a distraction as he prepares to step back into the cage on September 1 in Las Vegas.

Bellator Adds Alexis Vila to Bantamweight Division

by Michael David Smith

As it continues to carve out a niche for itself as the No. 2 promotion in mixed martial arts, Bellator has once again signed a fighter who's big on talent and capable of bringing a great deal of excitement into the cage in former Olympic wrestling bronze medalist Alexis Vila.

Before we get into all the reasons Vila is an exciting addition to Bellator's bantamweight tournament, let's get the two big problems out of the way ...
1. He's old: He turned 40 in March.
2. He's tiny: In the Olympics he wrestled at 105 pounds and most recently fought in MMA at 125 pounds.

UFC welterweights BJ Penn and Rory MacDonald have agreed to submit to Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) style testing prior to UFC 152. Frank Mir, the Strikeforce Crossover, and Who Should Be Next

Former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir has done us all a great service by agreeing to meet Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand-Prix winner Daniel Cormier in the Strikeforce cage this fall. After all, the other opponents rumored to have been under consideration ? Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett (again), KJ Noons sitting on Ryan Couture's shoulders ? weren't really options at all, and who else is there on the Strikeforce roster to challenge Cormier? The answer is no one, and with Mir shucking the bonds of the UFC for a one-time-only crossover bout, we get to have a match-up that's compelling on paper and will likely be very fun to watch.

However, the move doesn't address the other glaring holes that need to be filled in the roster of the House That Scott Coker Built. Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez has beaten everyone that matters in his division, middleweight champ Luke Rockhold is without a worthy foe, and gosh darn it, you can only spread Keith Jardine so thin. So who else should the UFC send over to fill Strikeforce's ranks? Sure, the dough and exposure is nowhere near as great compared to what you get for fighting in the Octagon, but look at Nate Marquardt. The ex-UFC welterweight waltzed in, put up a heck of a fight against Tyron Woodley, and is now the owner of a shiny new belt. For the fighters, there is certainly value in crossing over. Here, then, is a list of fighters on the UFC roster who could be prime candidates for taking the Strikeforce fieldtrip. It is by no means complete ? please, feel free to add to them in the comments. And if you disagree with my suggestions? picture me sad. So very sad.

  • Evan Dunham ? At one time, the word on the street was that the brass wanted B.J. Penn to take on Melendez in Strikeforce. But Penn is too much of a viable pay-per-view commodity, and it would've been senseless to waste him on the subscription-based channel Showtime. Evan Dunham, though, is another story entirely. The jiu-jitsu specialist had a pretty good win streak going before he was outpointed by Sean Sherk at UFC 119 and smashed by Melvin Guillard at UFC: Fight for the Troops 2, and his well-rounded skills could conceivably give Melendez fits no matter where the fight goes.

  • Clay Guida ? Fast, frenetic, and fun when he wants to be (i.e., when he's not running away for five rounds), Clay Guida could definitely make Melendez miserable in the cage. Besides, what's left for him in the UFC? It would take Ben Henderson, Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz all slipping on banana peels and breaking their legs before Guida could come close to tasting championship glory.

  • Gray Maynard ? As a former "wrestling man-blanket" turned "dangerous slugger", Gray Maynard could stuff Melendez's takedowns, squash his jiu-jitsu, and hit "El Nino" so hard his pet parrot dies. Also, what else is the UFC going to do with Maynard? If Edgar reclaims the lightweight championship from Henderson, watching Maynard and Edgar go at it once more is about as palatable as a plate of dirt.

  • Thiago Alves ? Once upon a time, Thiago Alves was in contention for the UFC welterweight title. Those days are gone now, but that doesn't mean that Alves isn't skilled and dangerous enough to make waves among Strikeforce's welterweights. Maybe, maybe Woodley could hold Alves down for three rounds. Maybe not, though, and Alves is just capable enough to beat him and beat Marquardt and take the belt.

  • Jon Fitch ? UFC welterweight king Georges St. Pierre mauled him, Johny Hendricks KO'd him, and he drew with Penn. However, other than that, Jon Fitch's run in the Octagon has been flawless. Boring, but flawless. Do you think Marquardt can prevent Fitch from hugging him to death? I don't. And I'd wager that once Fitch stepped into the cage to face Woodley, the two would stare at each other for a full fifteen minutes, unsure of what to do.

  • Chris Leben ? UFC middleweight stud Chris Leben is good for about two or three fights a year before his annual steroid suspension forces him to sit on the sidelines, so why not let him do those bouts in Strikeforce? In terms of skill set, he's got enough grappling to keep Rockhold from really hurting him. As for his striking? yeah, no way could Rockhold eat one of those concrete fists and survive.

  • Vladimir Matyushenko ? Look, it's not like any of the Strikeforce light-heavyweights can hold onto the belt for any length of time, but it's boring watching the same three guys fight for it over and over again. Put Vladimir Matyushenko in there against Mike Kyle, Gegard Mousasi and Rafael Cavalcante and let's see where it goes.

Jim Genia gets his tweet on here. Giddyup.

HYDEN BLOG: Michael Bisping Says Dumb Things; and UFC 149 Thoughts

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch contributor

In a recent interview, Michael Bisping said that his fight with Brian Stann is the real main event of UFC 152. Saying, "No one cares about little flyweights," Bisping said he and Stann were above the night's headliner in Joseph Benavidez vs. Demetrious Johnson for the UFC Flyweight Title. This is just a stupid thing to say. For starters, they're two of the best flyweights in the world, Bisping is a middle of the road middleweight, and Benavidez and Johnson are also fighting for a title.

Bisping also believes that if he wins this fight against Stann he deserves the next shot at Anderson Silva. He chooses to discount his decision loss to Chael Sonnen last January, and while it's true that there's not exactly a line of contenders out the door who deserve a shot at Silva, Bisping hasn't been especially impressive. I personally think that Stann goes out there and knocks him out, but if Bisping were to win in impressive fashion, I guess a title shot wouldn't be out of the question. He wouldn't be my first choice, but I could live with it.

The point is, title fights are always the main event. They're what everyone is fighting for. For Bisping to disrespect guys who have earned a title shot as opposed to just whining about earning one himself is just wrong. Some will say he's just trying to sell a fight, but unless Bisping plans on fighting either Benavidez or Johnson and proving me right that they would win, what's the point? There are still far too many people out there who equate size with greatness, and as a fighter Bisping should make it his job to try to educate those people into realizing that size is only one factor that determines how successful a fighter can be.

Another thing that Michael Bisping said during his little stump speech for his fight against Brian Stann was theirs was a fight between two big, hard-hitting guys and that someone was getting knocked out, but it wasn't going to be him. I only wish I was drinking water while I heard that so I could have done a spit-take. I don't know what makes Bisping believe that he's hard-hitting, but I believe the facts speak against him.

It's true that Bisping does have a lot of TKO stoppages, but those are stoppages where the ref steps in because Bisping is connecting with punch after punch. I'll give Bisping plenty of credit for being a good technical striker, but there's no question that he lacks power. Some guys have C-4 or semtex in their gloves, Bisping has Play-Doh. He's able to overcome that with good technique, but he needs to stop bragging about being a power puncher and come to realize his limitations.

I gave UFC 149 an 8.5 in my Torch Roundtable, which was very high compared to everyone else, and I think there were a lot of factors in this. I really enjoyed the Renan Barao vs. Uriah Faber fight. I also was factoring in the undercard that aired on FX. I don't feel the need to justify my scores, but I did want to clarify why I scored it as I did. It's true that there were some really bad moments and I was much more forgiving than I usually am. I watched the show with a lot of friends and we were having a good time so that factored in as well. I haven't gone blind or crazy, but sometimes things seem a lot better under certain circumstances.

Bellator 72 Fight Highlights - Bellator

"Travis Wiuff continues to amaze with another completely dominating performance, while Paul "Semtex" Daley did exactly what we thought he would in his Bellator debut by delivering another brutal knockout," said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney. "My hats off to Karl Amoussou, who came out as his usual explosive self and had everyone on their feet with a slick submission win. Amoussou vs. Askren is something I'm looking forward to, and should happen in short order." For Bellator welterweights Bryan "The Beast" Baker and Karl "Psycho" Amoussou, a win Friday night would not only earn them the Bellator Season 6 Welterweight Tournament Championship, but also $100,000 and a shot at Bellator Welterweight World Champion, Ben Askren. After briefly exchanging on the feet, Amoussou (16-4-2) swept the leg of Baker (18-4) and rather than taking the back, latched on to the leg of "The Beast." Baker immediately felt the pain of the inverted heel hook and tapped quickly to halt the bout at 0:56 of the first round. "I'm really happy right now," said an emotional Amoussou. "It's been a lot of hard work, and I'm so happy to be at this point right now."When asked about his next challenge, reigning Bellator Welterweight World Champion Ben Askren, Amoussou didn't hesitate."Lay and prayer, it's time for you to face the Psycho. I think Bellator needs a real exciting champion. Somebody is getting knocked out, and that somebody is going to be him."Entering the Bellator cage for the first time Friday night, vicious striker Paul "Semtex" Daley was looking to impress Bellator brass when he met 6-time Bellator veteran, Rudy Bears at the USF Sun Dome. While Bears (14-11) appeared to have some success early on, Daley (30-12-2) ultimately showed why he is considered one of the best knockout artists in MMA. After landing a series of brutal knees to the body of Bears, Daley unloaded with a barrage of punches until the referee was forced to stop the fight at 2:45 of the first round. "Anybody who trades with me is getting knocked out. Much respect to Rudy Bears for stepping in here with me," said Daley. "I'm looking to get in the tournament, and I'm going to win it."After choking out Zelg Galesic last month in the quarterfinals of the Bellator Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament, Attila Vegh was matched up with the toughest test of his career Friday night when he faced Emanuel Newton. Newton (18-7-1), was coming off a submission win of his own over Roy Boughton and looked to stop the momentum of "Pumukli." The story throughout the fight was the aggressiveness of Newton and the counter striking of Vegh (27-4-2). For three close rounds, both men went blow for blow until a decision was rendered by the judges. Two of the three judges scored the fight in favor of Attila Vegh, who will now move on to the finals of the Bellator Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament. "It was hard to train for the awkwardness he brings. The kicks were coming out of nowhere," said Vegh. "However, I was confident wherever the fight went. I trained for 15 minutes." After earning a decisive victory over Chris Davis in the quarterfinals of the Bellator Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament, Travis "Diesel" Wiuff undoubtedly wanted to impose his will on Tim Carpenter when the two met Friday night in a semifinal matchup. For three rounds, Wiuff (68-14) controlled Carpenter (9-2), utilizing his takedowns and landing devastating strikes from the guard. After dominating for the entire fight, Travis Wiuff was awarded the unanimous decision victory. After the fight, Wiuff had choice words for Bellator Light Heavyweight World Champion, Christian M'Pumbu. "Christian, I'm coming for you," said Wiuff. "It's only a matter of time, Christian. Next time I beat you, I'm taking that belt." In the first fight of the evening, Bellator welterweights Waachiim Spiritwolf and Marius Zaromskis were looking to pick up where they left off in their previous contest and finally put a stamp on their epic trilogy. Throughout the fight, Zaromskis (18-6) was the aggressor, constantly moving forward and avoiding the power shots of Spiritwolf (9-11-1). Zaromskis also showed off his improved takedown defense every time Spiritwolf attempted to take the fight to the ground. After the completion of three rounds, two of the three judge's cageside scored the fight in favor of Marius Zaromskis.

Last Saturday's preliminary card broadcast for UFC 149 drew an average of one million viewers to FX, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com.

The four-fight broadcast, capped off by the rematch between Court McGee and Nick Ring, came in sixth place of eight preliminary card broadcasts on the network, and saw a major dropoff from the FX record 1.8 million viewers who tuned in for UFC 148 earlier this month.

Gus Johnson's Contract Up at CBS

by Michael David SmithGus Johnson, the lead mixed martial arts play-by-play man for CBS who has called many of the most-watched fights in the sport's history, is reportedly leaving the network.

Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated reports that Johnson, who's best known for calling college football and the NFL, is leaving after failing to come to terms on a new contract with the network. UPDATE: The New York Daily News reports that while Johnson's contract with CBS has expired, it's still possible he could reach a new deal.

It's not clear whether Johnson is also out at Showtime, where he has been both a boxing and MMA play-by-play voice. Johnson will still be part of Saturday night's Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley pay-per-view broadcast, but it seems unlikely that Johnson would stick around at Showtime, which a division of the CBS Corporation, for long.

The latest rematch in the UFC's lightweight title picture is just two weeks away.

UFC officials recently released a new extended video preview of the UFC 150 main event between 155-pound champion Benson Henderson and ex-champ Frankie Edgar.

The 10-minute video details their first fight at UFC 144 this past February in Japan, at which Henderson took the belt from Edgar in a close fight, and the pair's training leading up to their rematch.

UFC on Fox 4 Update: Johnson vs. Swick Promoted to Main Card, Browne Pulled

As reported earlier, Ben Rothwell has suffered an ankle injury in preparation for his bout with Travis Browne. While a replacement for Rothwell was sought, the UFC decided to instead pull Travis Browne from the card all-together. The UFC decided to fill the void on the main card with a welterweight fight between Demarques Johnson and Mike Swick. UFC officials announced the news Wednesday evening.

Quinton Jackson draws Glover Teixeira in Brazil

To call the UFC's relationship with former champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson rocky is an understatement. With just one fight left on his contract, the UFC wanted to give him one last fight to remember.

What Bon Voyage gift did they give Jackson? A fight with phenom Glover Teixeira in Brazil in October at UFC 153. Teixeira, you may remember, is the fighter who blew through Kyle Kingsbury at UFC 146. His winning streak dates back to 2006, and his last six wins were by submission or decision.

Jackson, on the other hand, is 2-3 in his last five fights. His last win by stoppage was against Wanderlei Silva in 2008.

The UFC is also doing Jackson no favors by sending him to fight Teixeira in Brazil. Though Jackson spent much of his career in Japan with Pride, few non-Brazilian fighters have found success in the UFC's three cards there in the past year. Brazilians are 13-3 against foreigners across UFC 134, 142 and 147.

The two questions about this fight are will Jackson be able to stop the Teixeria hype train, and will he keep fighting after the bout is over? He has made it clear he doesn't want to stick with the UFC, but will Jackson fight elsewhere, or move on from MMA? Tell us what you think his next move should be.

Should Hector Lombard drop to welterweight after debut loss at UFC 149?

Hector Lombard came into UFC 149 riding a long win streak and an unstoppable hype train. He walked out of UFC 149 with a decision loss and a disappointed boss.

"It wasn't the fight I was expecting," UFC president Dana White admitted. "It just wasn't what I thought it was going to be. Whether it was Boetsch or Lombard winning, I was expecting a real war. I thought this thing was going to be a war."

It was far from an exciting bout, as Lombard, known for his aggression and knockouts, showed little aggressiveness in the bout. White wondered if Octagon jitters got the best of Lombard, and also threw out the idea that middleweight is too big of a weight class.

"Lombard maybe should fight at 170," White said. "He made 185 easily. He's short and wide, but I think he could make 170."

In a Q and A before the UFC 149 weigh-ins, middleweight Michael Bisping made jokes about Lombard's height.

"I bumped into Hector Lombard in the elevator, and I thought someone was playing a practical joke. I was like, 'Who is this dwarf?' I think he's in the wrong weight class. I think he's in the 125 weight class."

At 5-foot-9, Lombard is one of the shortest middleweights in the division. Most 185ers in the UFC are at least six-foot. Champion Anderson Silva is 6-foot-2. Though fighters have overcome height and reach differences in bouts -- think Travis Browne knocking out Stefan Struve -- there is no reason for Lombard to come into the fight at a disadvantage if he is comfortable dropping down.

Should he drop down? Tell us your thoughts in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Dana White says he had to ask "Rampage" Jackson to honor the last fight on his contract

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"Me and Rampage had this conversation and he said, 'Cut me from my contract right now.' And I said, 'Dude, we've had your back every step of the way, we've honored every contract that we've ever had with you ? honor yours.' He said, 'That's true. You're right. I will honor my contract.' Rampage loves us one minute and hates us the next, loves the sport one minute and hates it the next. I don't dislike or hate him. It's up to him. It's his life. It's not one of these things where I'm like, 'Oh, God, Rampage, don't do this.' It's Rampage's life. If you decide you don't want to be here anymore, we're not going to hold you down and keep you do it."

-Dana White talks about having to convince "Rampage" Jackson to take the last fight on his contract after the UFC 149 post-fight press conference (via MMAJunkie.com).

Penick's Analysis: That's the part of this entire "Rampage" saga that makes his side nonsensical; through all of the issues he's had outside of the cage, the UFC stood behind him. They defended him when he had his episode through the streets of Orange County; they dealt with him when he skipped out on his coaches fight with Rashad Evans to shoot the A-Team. Yet he wanted his release immediately because the UFC dared to point out to him that his star has taken a bit of a fall in the last year; and this still after they gave him another title fight last September. His last contracted fight will now come at UFC 153 in October, and if he doesn't change his mind about leaving the UFC, he'll be gone after that.

Ryan Jimmo ties UFC fastest knockout record in debut at UFC 149

After a decorated career with the Canadian promotion MFC, Ryan Jimmo made a memorable UFC debut. He knocked out Anthony Perosh in seven seconds at UFC 149 in Calgary on Saturday.

Light heavyweight Jimmo took two steps in at Perosh before unloading a massive right hand that knocked Perosh right against the fence. He followed up with a strike on the ground, but it wasn't needed. Referee Josh Rosenthal stopped the fight, and Jimmo's win streak was extended to 17.

"I'm very happy, Joe. I'm very happy," Jimmo said to commentator Joe Rogan. "He's a big strong guy, so I went at him."

UFC president Dana White was pleased with Jimmo's debut.

"WOW!!! Ryan Jimmo just tied the fastest KO in UFC history!" White tweeted.

Jimmo is now 17-1 and 1-0 in the UFC. Before fighting with the UFC, Jimmo showed why a fighter shouldn't give up after one loss. He was knocked out in his first fight, but has won 17 bouts since then. Though he was impressive in Canada, Jimmo was only known in the U.S. to the most fervent of fight fans, but now he will be known for a seven-second debut.

Perosh was on a three-fight win streak before ending up on the wrong end of an MMA record. He is now 13-7, and 3-2 in his most recent streak in the UFC.

Alan Belcher vs. Vitor Belfort heading to UFC 153 in Brazil

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

It looks like Alan Belcher will get his wish. After calling out Vitor Belfort on Twitter, and having Belfort accept that challenge via Twitter, several published reports now state that the fight has been agreed to officially for UFC 153 in Rio de Janeiro this October.

After accepting the fight in English on Twitter, Belfort posted a statement in Portuguese saying that the bout with Belcher is one UFC President Dana White wanted to see. With that extra push, Belfort has gone with this fight, dropping his previous callout of Chris Weidman - who himself may be next in line to face Anderson Silva.

Belfort returns to action for the first time since January, where he submitted Anthony Johnson at UFC 142. He was supposed to return at UFC 147 against Wanderlei Silva after they coached against one another on "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil," but suffered a broken hand that took him out of the event.

Belcher enters what will be the next biggest fight of his career off a fantastic performance against Rousimar Palhares at UFC on Fox 3 in May. Showing no fear in going to the ground with the leg lock specialist, Belcher wound up escaping a bad spot and delivering a TKO finish in the first round. That win was his fourth straight, and brought him to 8-2 over his last ten fights.

Penick's Analysis: This is a fantastic middleweight fight, and the perfect fight for them both. Our own Rich Hansen called for this fight on Sunday when he broke down the
top 20 in the division and how they should all be booked against one another, and it is just a great matchup at 185 lbs. Belcher's win over Palhares deserved a fight of this magnitude, and taking on a major name - a former champion and recent title challenger - gives him the opportunity to earn his first shot at the Middleweight Championship. Conversely, Belcher is much more of a veteran in the UFC than Weidman, and a win over him would mean just as much for Belfort in getting himself back to another title fight. Brazil's got three major fights already for the UFC 153 event, now they just have to hope it doesn't have the same injury and logistics issues that plagued UFC 147.
