Alistair Overeem pokes fun at Junior dos Santos during UFC 155

Before Junior Dos Santos' bout with Cain Velasquez was over, another opponent was poking fun of the former champ. Alistair Overeem was scheduled to fight dos Santos in May, but was suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission because of high testosterone levels before the fight.

Overeem tweeted:

Ouch! Though Overeem has a beef with dos Santos, he has to get through Antonio Silva on Feb. 2 first. Overeem applied for a license this week. He will have to appear before a hearing on Jan. 8 before he is approved.

If dos Santos and Overeem do end up fighting, it won't be for the title. Velasquez beat dos Santos in a one-sided, five-round decision on Saturday night at UFC 155.

STRIKEFORCE "MARQUARDT VS. SAFFIEDINE" PREVIEW: Penick's fight picks for final Strikeforce event

Strikeforce_Logo_wide_24.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The final Strikeforce card ever will come to Showtime Saturday night, with five fights airing live on the night's main card. They've got a chance to go out with one of their higher rated cards, due to the fact that it's a free preview weekend for Showtime. Regardless of ratings, the fighters on Saturday's main card broadcast have been put into some unenviable positions.

For several of the night's massive favorites, anything less than dominant victory doesn't look great into their UFC debuts, while those underdogs may need to pull something off in order to get a shot in the Octagon in the first place.

So here's what's at stake on the card, and how I think things play out in Oklahoma:

Nate Marquardt vs. Tarec Saffiedine (Welterweight Championship): Along with Daniel Cormier, Marquardt's one of the fighters on this card who legitimately might be a top contender once they get to the UFC. Marquardt's a former title challenger in the middleweight division, and though he faltered near the end of his 185 lb. run, he looks renewed as a welterweight, and might be one of the most well-rounded fighters in the division.

Saffiedine, while a solid fighter, has never fought someone at Marquardt's level. Perhaps the toughest fight he's had came against Tyron Woodley, who defeated him by decision in 2011. Well, Marquardt just destroyed Woodley last year to capture the Strikeforce title, and he's a heavy favorite in this main event for a reason.

Saffiedine doesn't have the wrestling or takedown game to follow the gameplans that have been effective against Marquardt. He'll look to stand and strike, and against a violent and effective striker like Marquardt that's not a promising fact.

Marquardt is more than likely going to do what needs to be done, and he'll enter the UFC's welterweight division in 2013 with a very good chance of fighting for the title sooner than later. I've got Marquardt by TKO in the second round.

Daniel Cormier vs. Dion Staring (Heavyweight): Cormier might be the best heavyweight in the world. He just beat Josh Barnett to win the Strikeforce Heavyweight World Grand Prix. He's now facing a man whose biggest "name" win might be TUF vet Akira Corassani, who is now in the featherweight division.

Cormier has felt it's disrespectful to Staring that betting lines are as much as 20-to-1, but honestly, he has no business having any trouble in this fight at all. Anything can happen in a fight, it's the nature of the sport, but Daniel Cormier should be leaps and bounds ahead of Staring.

It's not fair to Cormier, of course, but that's the position he's been put in here by Zuffa. He absolutely should wreck Staring, and I expect him to dominate, but it could be ugly. Cormier by TKO in the first round.

Josh Barnett vs. Nandor Guelmino (Heavyweight): The two biggest names Guelmino has fought were Andreas Kraniotakes, and Semmy Schilt. He was stopped by both of them.

By contrast, Barnett's loss to Daniel Cormier last year was his first in over five years. He's the better grappler, he's the better striker, and once again, this is a fight that, on paper, should be absolutely one sided.

For Barnett, a win - especially an exciting one - could very well bring him back into the UFC for the first time in 11 years. That's exactly what should happen here, and I'll take Barnett by submission in the first round.

Gegard Mousasi vs. Mike Kyle (Light Heavyweight): Mousasi's been out of action for over a year due to a knee injury, and that layoff makes this more of an even fight than it might have been otherwise.

Kyle's not a great fighter, but he's got some very real striking power, and is capable of putting forth some solid performances inside the cage. He might be a real challenge for Mousasi, but the former Strikeforce Champion has a very diverse game with a dangerous skill set on the ground and standing.

Kyle could present a challenge in this fight, but it's just as likely that he gets dominated by Mousasi here. Even with a year out of the cage, he's got great power, great submissions, and wants to make a statement into a UFC run. I think that comes through on Saturday, and I'll take Mousasi by submission in the first round.

Ed Herman vs. Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (Middleweight): This could be a really good fight, or it could be a stalemate that is less than exciting. Herman's been in some great fights in the UFC, and Jacare's been in some very good fights as well, but stylistically, they could cancel each other out.

One of the key things to look at here is the fight Herman had with Jake Shields last August. Jacare's got a great wrestling game, which plays into his jiu jitsu game. Herman's typically very good at defending, but he can be put on his back.

That could lead to three duller rounds with Jacare working from the top as Herman continues defending. If that's not the case, Jacare's decent enough in striking to hang with Herman if they cancel each other out on the ground.

Still, Herman's strength is his submission game, and of the two, most would take Jacare in that aspect of the game. Herman's a great challenge for Jacare, but the former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion should be able to rise to the occasion. Jacare by decision.

WWE SmackDown! Taping Draws 1,600 Paying Customers

Last Tuesday’s SmackDown! taping in Toledo, Ohio was one of the worst attended WWE events in years as it drew 3,200 fans, with only 1,600 paid.
Following the event’s poor advance, WWE only sold tickets facing the camera so the Huntington Center would appear full on television. SLAM! Wrestling columnist Matt Bishop, who attended the event, described the venue’s appearance: “Tuesday’s tapings of WWE Smackdown, Superstars and NXT wasn’t notable because of what happened in the ring, but rather because of what was happening outside the ringside area. Benson Henderson and the case of the missing toothpick

Immediately after UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson was declared the winner of his UFC on Fox 5 bout with Nate Diaz, UFC commentator Joe Rogan asked about a toothpick. Henderson is known for having a toothpick hanging from his mouth outside the cage -- it's been in his mouth every time I've interviewed him -- but he wouldn't fight with a toothpick in his mouth, right? Henderson was elusive and wouldn't really answer Rogan's question.

He wasn't any more forthcoming in the post-fight press conference.

"I cannot confirm or deny that," Henderson said. "I normally do, yeah. I have it in through practices, and when I spar, when I fight. It's a bad habit, but whatever. I've gotten away with it so far."

[Related: Benson Henderson leaves little doubt in win over Nate Diaz | Photos]

At least he admits that it's a bad habit. It's not illegal, but it is a bad idea. Fighting with a small piece of wood in your mouth opens the door for all kinds of silly injuries. The broken arms and head contusions we're used to in MMA will look like scrapes and bruises if we see a toothpick lodge itself in Henderson or his opponent.

But maybe it won't ever bother him. When Michael Jordan played basketball, he always had a piece of gum in his mouth. He would chomp, chomp, chomp when at the free-throw line, when bringing the ball up the court, or when trash-talking his opponent. I always was convinced he would choke when going for the ball, but it didn't happen. Hopefully, Henderson's toothpick will be just a nasty habit, and not a nasty injury we can never forget.

With lucrative new deal secured, UFC Champ Ben Henderson wants Strikeforce Champ Gilbert Melendez next

HendersonBen_Wide_9.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Heading into this month, many believed Anthony Pettis would be in line for a title fight - and rematch - with UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson if he got past Donald Cerrone at UFC on Fox 6. However, the end of Strikeforce has brought longtime Strikeforce Lightweight Champion - and perennial top five lightweight - Gilbert Melendez into the conversation.

With Melendez being held as one of the top 155 lb. fighters in the world for years, Henderson's camp wants that fight, and it seems the once thought No. 1 contender bout between Pettis and Cerrone may be anything but.

"We really like the Gilbert Melendez fight, and I'll tell you why: Gilbert Melendez has been ranked either No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3 between himself, Frankie Edgar and Benson," Henderson's manager Malki Kawa said in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. "Frankie was considered No. 1 in the world, and Benson beat him. Now some people are saying Gilbert might be No. 1 in the world. OK, well Benson would like to beat him, too, and leave no doubt that he is the best 155-pounder in the world."

"Depending on whose poll you look at over the past few years, it's been those guys in the top three spots, and Benson definitely wants to fight the best guys in the world. He's already defeated Frankie. Beating Gilbert would prove that Benson is absolutely the best lightweight in MMA."

This comes after Henderson locked up a new fight contract this past week, likely in response to the numbers revealed in the Eddie Alvarez offer that has him tied up in litigation with Bellator. While Kawa wouldn't go into any details on the deal, he affirmed that Henderson was definitely taken care of by the UFC.

"Obviously we could never get into specifics about a contract, but it's a very fair deal and one that stands to make Benson a lot of money," Kawa said. "We felt the UFC was very fair in their handling of the discussions, and this is a very lucrative contract. This contract can secure Benson's future. He just has to go out and win. If he can win his next few fights, he'll be a very happy man."

"We're really interested in fighting Gilbert Melendez, and we've got a lot of confidence that the UFC will make that fight happen. Right now we're just happy to have this contract done, and we're going to sit back and hope that this is the fight they give us. It's the top two lightweight fighters in the world at this point. It needs to happen."

Penick's Analysis: I disagree with taking Melendez over Pettis - should Pettis defeat Cerrone - for a couple of reasons. First, Melendez's stock has taken a dip in the last couple of years. He's had to fight lesser opposition, he's been battling injuries for the last year, and he hasn't drawn the attendance or viewership on television that he used to draw. Pettis has had his own issues with injuries, of course, but his next fight will be coming on Fox this month, with a chance to get a ton of exposure in a lead up to an eventual pay-per-view fight. If the Henderson wants to be on pay-per-view instead of Fox, Pettis is the opponent after this month. That said, if the UFC is putting Henderson back on Fox, a fight with Melendez could work, as that April Fox event will be at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. Again, though, Melendez didn't draw well there the last time he fought at the venue, so there are more factors involved. Still, with Henderson's camp pushing for Melendez, he'll effectively be pushing aside the man who beat him in the WEC once more.

UFC 155?s Derek Brunson was a cheerleader before he started fighting

Long before he put together a 9-2 record and earned a spot against Chris Leben at UFC 155, Derek Brunson was a cheerleader. As he shows in his audition video for "The Ultimate Fighter," Brunson was an accomplished tumbler and stunter. Skip to the 2:10 mark to see him toss his partner up into one-handed stunts and throw a double-twisting flip.

He talked about his cheerleading past with MMA Fighting, and pointed out how difficult cheerleading can be.

"I can do flips, and I was like tossing girls in the air. That's where I got my strength from, just controlling girls in the air. You get core strength, your chest gets all big. It makes you really strong, like you look on steroids, but you don't have to take steroids because of cheerleading."

Though Brunson wrestled in college, he said he did have scholarship offers for cheerleading. Wrestling and eventually MMA won out. Brunson admitted that MMA is more dangerous than cheerleading, but it's still tough.

"Cheerleading is definitely hard on your body. That's why I decided to wrestle in college, not cheerlead."

Pacquiao vs. Mosley: Why MMA Fans Should Care

by Michael David SmithManny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley will fight Saturday night in Las Vegas. We'll have full results and live round-by-round scoring for Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley on Saturday night, which may lead to a few readers wondering, What's boxing news doing on an MMA site? Here are five reasons why you, if you're an MMA fan, should care about Pacquiao vs. Mosley:

1. It's the biggest combat sports event of the year.
For as much as the UFC has gained on -- and in some respects surpassed -- the popularity of boxing, the biggest fights in boxing still exceed the biggest fights in the UFC in terms of pay-per-view buys and worldwide media attention. Although the MGM Grand in Las Vegas obviously won't attract nearly as many fans as the 55,000 who came out to see Georges St. Pierre in Toronto, Pacquiao vs. Mosley will surely get more pay-per-view buys in the United States, far more mainstream media attention and far more attention globally, as Pacquiao is a draw throughout Asia and the single biggest celebrity in the Philippines, a country of nearly 100 million people. This is a major worldwide sporting event.

They premiered a new WWE logo video to start, reading ?then,? ?now,? and ?forever.? The show then featured video of Raw moments throughout the years. There was plenty of good stuff in there, but also a heavy emphasis on the ridiculous and on celebrity guest hosts. They have a new set on the stage too. It looks good and is basically the same as before.

Quebec commission declines to hear Alessio Sakara's UFC 154 appeal request

Patrick Cote's controversial UFC 154 disqualification victory over Alessio Sakara will stand.

On Friday, Quebec's La Regie des alcools des courses et des jeux (the baord that governs combat sports in the province) declined to hear Sakara's protest that referee Dan Miragliotta mishandled the bout, which took place Nov. 17 at Montreal's Bell Centre.

Benson Henderson holds on to UFC lightweight belt with controlling win over Nate Diaz

The UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson held on to his belt with a dominating performance over Nate Diaz at the Key Arena in Seattle on Saturday night. Henderson took the five-round bout 50-43, 50-45, 50-45. Henderson landed 133 significant strikes throughout the bout.

Henderson set the tone early when he got a takedown and stood over Diaz before landing shots. Throughout the round, Henderson peppered Diaz with leg kicks. It caused damage early and throughout the bout.

Diaz showed signs of life in the third round with leg lock and heel hook submission attempts. Both times Henderson was able to get out. Late in the round, he dropped Diaz, who continued to try for leg submissions.

At the end of the fourth round, Henderson jumped around and showed how fresh he was while Diaz had to get his eyes checked by the fight doctor. Henderson had a big takedown in the fifth, and continued to control Diaz throughout the round.

When the fight was over, Henderson reportedly walked over towards the media on press row and shouted to them:

"I don't talk, it's in here. Do you guys get it?"

This was Henderson's second title defense. He is undefeated since joining the UFC and has a record of 17-2. His last two bouts were razor-close decisions, but with this fight, Henderson has a signature performance to show he is deserving of the UFC's shiny, gold belt.

Going into this fight, Diaz had three wins at lightweight. Two were by submission, but his submission skills didn't work on Henderson. Diaz falls to an overall record of 16-8.

Someone in New York City voted for Chael Sonnen for president

Chael Sonnen, the UFC fighter who is known as much for his trash talk as his fighting skills, has a passionate fanbase. They pay to watch him on pay-per-views, stand in line for hours for autographs and pictures, and hang on his every word. One fan even thought enough of Sonnen that he or she cast a ballot for him in the 2012 presidential election.

New York City's official election results were posted today. According to the New York Times, one vote was tallied for Sonnen. He received the same amount of votes as Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City.

Though the voter probably knew his or her vote wouldn't result in a Sonnen presidency, Sonnen has had political ambitions in the past. In 2010, he ran for a Senate seat in his home state of Oregon, but withdrew when a legal issue arose. The legal issue turned out to be money laundering in connection with his job as a realtor. Sonnen plead guilty in 2011.

Now, Sonnen's sights are on UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. The two will coach against each other on the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter," and face off in April.

Watch Ben Askren get hit in the face with a cream pie

Bellator champ Ben Askren was sitting down with the nice people at Sherdog for an interview when BAM. He was hit in the face with a whipped cream pie. Who could have done something so mischievous?

Yep, that was UFC fighter Alan Belcher. In addition to covering Askren in whipped cream, Belcher is getting ready for Yushin Okami at UFC 155. Askren's next bout is against Karl Amoussou in late January.

Dana White: UFC not mainstream in the U.S. yet, but bigger than the NFL globally

Dana_White_wide_banner_24.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"I still don't consider us mainstream. We've been on Fox for a year, holding our numbers. We're in 175 countries. We just went into China for the first time. The fight that we did [last November] in Macao was the biggest fight they've ever had in China. We're bigger than the NFL globally, but nothing's bigger than the NFL in this country.

Ultimate Fighter is a very important television show for [UFC]. There's a lot of misconceptions about the sport and the people who compete in it. When we bought the company one of our big challenges was we wanted to get this thing on free television. When we bought the company, it wasn't even allowed on Pay Per View. I would definitely like to be as big as the NFL someday."

-Dana White talks to reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour about the UFC's current status in the sports landscape, and where they'd like to get (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Penick's Analysis: The UFC still hasn't taken a hold of the U.S. market in the way they'd like, but there's no denying the global success they've experienced in the last several years. The numbers they've scored in Brazil alone have been fantastic, and they're continuing to expand to country after country with more and more television deals. So while they don't come close to the top sports in the U.S. currently, they're still doing very well worldwide.

Gus Johnson Signs With Fox but Stays With Showtime

by Michael David SmithLast week it was revealed that Gus Johnson's contract with CBS had expired, and on Tuesday morning it was reported that Johnson has accepted a job at Fox. But that doesn't mean he's done as the voice of mixed martial arts on Showtime, the sister network of CBS.

Sources told MMAFighting.com that Johnson's contract with CBS was for basketball and football, and that his deal to call fights (both MMA and boxing) for Showtime was a separate contract. That contract is still in effect, and Johnson will call Saturday night's Andre Ward-Arthur Abraham boxing match for Showtime. Although Showtime hasn't yet announced who will broadcast its next MMA show (a June 18 Strikeforce card), Johnson is expected to call that event as well.

Theoretically, it's even possible that Johnson could be back on the CBS airwaves if CBS ever aired another Strikeforce fight: When Johnson called EliteXC and Strikeforce fights on CBS in the past, that was part of his Showtime deal. It's probably a long shot that we'd see Johnson back on CBS, however.

Greg Jackson expects "a real war" between Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis at UFC on Fox 6

UFC_on_Fox_logo_wide_5.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"Cowboy is certainly a little unique in the way he does his striking, and we've seen how dynamic Pettis is. I don't think it will be typical anywhere. On the ground, on the feet, in the wrestling aspect - I don't think it's going to be a typical fight anywhere just because both of these guys are so talented. It's going to be one of those fights where you have to fight for small things and try to get the advantage where you can. It's a real war. I'm really looking forward to the fight. Pettis is amazing. He comes from a great camp, and I think it's going to be a hell of a fight.

The nice thing about using the 'Showtime' kick - and you never know if he's got new tricks or not - but you know it's coming. If he jumps up there, Cowboy's going to say, 'OK, it's going to come for the head,' and hopefully he'll put his hand up or move out of the way. But definitely, the amount of studying that Cowboy's done - he says, 'Oh, I just get in there and fight,' but he's actually pretty smart about what he does and I'm sure he'll be ready for that. But for me, it's much more of what we can improve on in Cowboy's game to stop Pettis from kind of having his way. We focused a lot on that.

-Trainer Greg Jackson discusses the upcoming UFC on Fox 6 bout between Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis in an interview with Sherdog.com.

Penick's Analysis: Jackson's clearly got a lot of respect for the skills of Anthony Pettis, and Cerrone knows he's got a very dangerous opponent in front of him, even if he puts up a front otherwise. There's no reason to believe the fight will be anything less than excellent, as the matchup lends itself to an exciting bout on paper. They're both fairly dynamic in a number of aspects of the game, and this fight may come down to something Jackson touches on here. If Pettis is allowed to have his way, it could be a very rough night for Cerrone, but if Cerrone can stop him from doing that, things could be very interesting in Chicago.
